the world has moved on to antialiased fonts. You can try changing the
default font in Edit → Options after opening a repository, or you can
enable antialiasing by switching to Tk 8.5 with the commands I gave you
in comment 2.

I can confirm the same issue; installation via the alpha 2 32bit
alternate media takes ~2 hours when installing to a btrfs partition,
compared to ~15 minutes to ext4. I'm not sure that system specs are
necessary, because I don't think this is a bug (or if it is, it should
be addressed upstream).

I'm still watching, but I lack both time and ideas. Kubuntu 10.04 does not run
pulseaudio so that could be the reason for differences in behavior. (Kubuntu
10.10 will run Pulseaudio, btw.)
That there are no noise floor calibration timeouts under kubuntu seems
