[Bug 665235] Re: attaching a volume to maverick instance may boot off it

2010-11-06 Thread Clint Byrum
I tried the same steps and did not get /dev/sdh as the root, but I see
that they do both have the same label, and concur that labels may not be
the best way to differentiate these volumes.

UUID also isn't unique, so I'm at a loss to identify a good way to
determine which is which.

Either way, this is definitely an undesirable behavior, so I'm marking
this Confirmed.

Hello Ernest, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and

There seems to be a directory missing:

/var/run/mysqld must exist for mysqld to start properly.

Please try to create that directory as root and then re-attempt your
update.

sudo mkdir /var/run/mysqld

If you are not using the mysql server package, you may also want to
remove it with

sudo apt-get remove mysql-server

Also, Ubuntu 9.04 has reached its End of Life , and will not be
receiving updates (security or otherwise) anymore. We highly recommend
that you upgrade to 9.10 or later ASAP!

2010-11-06 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Erik, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better!

It would appear that your passwd file was locked for some reason:

useradd: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later.
adduser: `/usr/sbin/useradd -d /var/run/xrdp -g xrdp -s /bin/false -u 117 xrdp'
returned error code 1. Exiting.

You may want to check to see if there are currently running programs
that have it locked with

fuser -v /etc/passwd

This should show any processes with /etc/passwd opened and/or locked.

It may also be easier to reboot, and then attempt the update again.

[Bug 671021] Re: kill -9 kvm crashes ssh daemon

2010-11-06 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Jeff, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and help
us make Ubuntu better.

I just tried to reproduce this, albeit running a Linux vm since I don't
have win2k3. kill -9 on the kvm process just resulted in kvm's death,
but my ssh session worked fine.

I used these steps:

qemu-img create -f hardy.img 20G
kvm --name hardy -m 384 -hda hardy.img -cdrom isos/hardy-mini.iso -nographic
kill -9 pidof kvm

Nothing crashes.

Can you look in /var/log/auth.log and see if sshd prints any messages
before dying?

Marking Incomplete pending response from Jeff.

EBS volumes and snapshots create this sort of problem regularly for me,
generally with conflicting duplicate XFS UIDs which I have to override.

The best solution for EC2 AMIs may be to always accept that /dev/sda1 is

Good question. I'm experiencing some issues with the root filesystem

[Bug 667986] Re: Disk image type defaults to raw since 0.7.5-5ubuntu27.5

2010-11-06 Thread Marek Šabo
As this information is not that easy to come by, here is a sample code for
domain xml file. You have to specify driver tag with attribute type set to the
image type. (Or alternatively, as described in security notice, adjust the
'allow_disk_format_probing'
option in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf)

Example:

disk type='file' device='disk'
  driver type='qcow2'/
  source file='myDisk.qcow2'/
  ...
 /disk

We now use the type= part.

Something different but also related to this new behavior.
Live migration seems to crash the VM with VM's started before the upgrades. I
can't reproduce it beceause all hosts are upgraded and I now don't do live
migrations anymore because of 3 fails out of 3.
The live migration only crashes the VM when we use qcow2 and migrate to another
host which is also upgraded. The destination host reads the qcow2 as raw
ouch!
The VM on the destination has the driver type='raw'/ with virsh dumpxml. On
the source host it was driver type='qcow2'/.

[Bug 671021] Re: kill -9 kvm crashes ssh daemon

2010-11-06 Thread Jeff Kowalczyk
I have an additional data point: the ssh daemon does not actually crash,
it just stops responding for a few minutes. The connection was left
intact during today's experiment, but no input was processed. It looks
like a frozen connection, but it did come back into an active state
eventually.

Here is the auth.log tail. I usually have resolved the problem by going
to webmin and restarting the ssh daemon, but today I was slower to
initiate that webmin login, when I noticed the SSH connection was
actively accepting input again:

Re: [Bug 665235] Re: attaching a volume to maverick instance may boot off it

2010-11-06 Thread Scott Moser
On Sat, 6 Nov 2010, Eric Hammond wrote:

generally with conflicting duplicate XFS UIDs which I have to override.

The best solution for EC2 AMIs may be to always accept that /dev/sda1 is
 the boot disk.

Well, I chose to use label because LABEL= is much newer way of booting,
and with UUID even more so. I would have used UUID, but at the time that
the initial /boot/grub/menu.lst is written in the vmbuilder code, there is
no UUID because the filesystem has not been written yet (its in a chroot).

update-grub-legacy-ec2 is what ends up writing this. That is largely a
copy of 'update-grub' from the 'grub' package (not grub2). I
intentionally left as much the same as I could get a way with. Because of
that, the problem is even further complicated because when
update-grub-legacy-ec2 runs (on kernel installation or dpkg-reconfigure),
it will end up writing with UUID (which is its prefered mechanism).

That behavior was generally OK to me, but can cause other issues (just as
label does) like bug 671427.

/dev/sda1 does seem like the simplest answer, but its not ideal for 2
reasons
a.) /dev/sda1 is really not what the device should be named (we carry a
patch to turn xen pv disk devices from xvdX to sdX)
b.) on UEC (and on openstack) the root device is likely to be named
/dev/vda1. This is not *really* a problem, as grub2 loads the kernels on
UEC and pv-grub via update-grub-legacy-ec2's /boot/grub/menu.lst does so
on ec2.

So, lost of info there, but thats why its not as simple as it might first
appear.

[Bug 592328] Re: please merge xmakemol 5.16-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-11-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package xmakemol - 5.16-5ubuntu1

---
xmakemol (5.16-5ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable(LP: #592328). Remaining changes:
- Don't build a GL-enabled version (lesstif isn't in main, so the GL
  libraries aren't built with it):
  + debian/control: Don't build-depend on libgl1-mesa-swx11-dev or
freeglut3-dev.
  + debian/rules: Don't build the OpenGL-enabled version.

xmakemol (5.16-5) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/control (Build-Depends): Added dpatch.
  * debian/rules: Include /usr/share/dpatch/dpatch.make and let the
build-stamp target depend on patch-stamp.
  * debian/patches/03_h-bond-factor.dpatch: New patch, decrease hydrogen bond
factor so intramolecular h-bonds are less likely to be displayed.

xmakemol (5.16-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/control: Bumped to 3.8.3.
(Vcs-Svn): Fixed.
(Depends): Fixed debhelper-but-no-misc-depends.
  * debian/rules (%/config.status): Fix configure options for OpenGL-enabled
build - a bug introduced by myself in 5.16-2 (closes: #548124).
(binary-arch): Removed deprecated dh_desktop.
  * debian/xmakemol.desktop: Removed Icon field because of non-existent icon
(closes: #547966).
  * debian/xmakemol.doc-base,
debian/xmakemol-gl.doc-base: Added.

[Bug 448682] Re: Cannot stop couchdb using /etc/init.d/couchdb after package install

2010-11-06 Thread Mathias Gug
couchdb will not be killed by its init script because signal 1 is
ignored if the daemon has been started during package installation:

$ cat /proc/$(cat /var/run/couchdb/couchdb.pid)/status

SigIgn: 1007
[...]

If couchdb has been started by its init script during boot time or from
the console then signal 1 is not ignored:

$ cat /proc/$(cat /var/run/couchdb/couchdb.pid)/status
SigIgn: 1006

The couchdb script uses signal 1 to kill the erlang vm.

[Bug 671730] Re: http://portal.dvc.gov.in and http://cbse.nic.in dose not open at all

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thanks for taking the time to report the bug. With Maverick, I seem to
be able to access both sites with no issues, using firefox. In order to
see if it's a problem with Ubuntu or FIrefox, please check if you can
access these sites with either a different browser (Chrome for example)
and/or with a different OS. Also please make sure your firewall does not
block access to these sites.

I am setting the status of this bug incomplete. Feel free to reopen it
if you still experience it and the problem is unique with Firefox on
Ubuntu.

Thanks again.

[Bug 671664] Re: slow computer after upgrade

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. In order to help us
understanding any of the issues you describe we would need some more
details, and in particular:

1. Which version of ubuntu did you upgrade from (it appears you are
running 8.04).

2. I would recommend for you to clean up your installation packages by
running in the terminal the following command:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

3. If you are still running 8.04, I would strongly recommend, after you
perform step 1 and 2, to upgrade to at least 10.04 (which is a long term
release) or 10.10.

I am going to set the status of this bug as incomplete. Feel free to
reopen the bug (by setting the status to New) once you have the
information requested.

Hello Ernest, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

There seems to be a directory missing:

S'està configurant libc6-i686 (2.9-4ubuntu6.3) ...

S'està configurant mysql-server-5.0 (5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10.5) ...

Closing as Invalid.

[Bug 670575] Re: 10.10 after installation sound not working

2010-11-06 Thread tellapu
After some more research, I found following instruction that solved my problem
(so far :-):
Using a Terminal=Applications-Accessories-Terminal
Open this file for editing:
Code: gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Insert this line at the bottom:
Code: options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
Save. Close. Reboot.

Check your levels in alsamixer.
Code: alsamixer
Press F6 to select the correct soundcard.
Press F3 to show playback levels. F4 selects capture levels [or use Tab]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change
levels. M to mute/unmute.
Go to System -Preferences -Sound and make sure the correct soundcard is
default and adjust your profile on the hardware tab.
On the output tab choose the correct device.

[Bug 666601] Re: Xorg does not dump core (via file nor Apport) on crash

2010-11-06 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Thanks for that, Gustavo. I would just add two things to your
instructions:

1. ulimit -c unlimited at some point, so that ulimit doesn't prevent a
core file from being generated;

2. Remember to specify the display, e.g. DISPLAY=:0 gnome-session :-)

Even with all that, if Apport is enabled, you don't get a core dump. The
only way you get a core is if Apport is disabled (i.e. core_pattern
specifies a file instead of a pipe). Very odd.

I finally got a core, force-fed it after-the-fact into Apport, and got
bug #671293.

[Bug 671754] [NEW] Hard to find available software (users and groups)

2010-11-06 Thread Osmo Laitinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Applications doesn't show all applications and that might be fine if it
is performance related (see #660979).

However, in this particular case I wanted to add new users.

1. Went to All applications, but apparently it doesn't show all
applications, but just first 60 (10 rows and 6 colums), last one being
Text editor.

2. Went to system view: only 36 applications visible (6x6), Ubuntu One
being last one

3. Went back to All applications and since I happened to know what I
want to find I typed u to search bar, but User and Groups didn't
appear. What about a (for adding user) and voila: it was there.

4. Went back to system and this time I was able to find users and groups
with letter u.

[Bug 671494] Re: Computer Freezes since Updates

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for your report. It would greatly help if you could report
which version of Ubuntu you are running. Also it would be great if you
could provide a list of packages that were included in the update:

Open synaptic (Package manager) under and System-Administration)
Select the menu: File-history,
find the most recent update that seems to have issues
copy and paste here the list of packages that were installed.

In addition, when ubuntu is running (but without any program open), open
the System Monitor from the main menu (System-Administration). Select
the tab processes. Order the list by the process running the highest %
CPU (by pushing % CPU). Report here the processes with the highest CPU
%.

I am going to set the status of this bug as incomplete. Feel free to
reopen it or report back once you have the required information.

Thanks.

2010-11-06 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
