I tried the same steps and did not get /dev/sdh as the root, but I see that they do both have the same label, and concur that labels may not be the best way to differentiate these volumes. Hi Jeff, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and help us make Ubuntu better. [Bug 667986] Re: Disk image type defaults to raw since 0.7.5-5ubuntu27.5
We now use the type= part. Something different but also related to this new behavior. Live migration seems to crash the VM with VM's started before the upgrades. I can't reproduce it beceause all hosts are upgraded and I now don't do live migrations anymore because of 3 fails out of 3. The live migration only crashes the VM when we use qcow2 and migrate to another host which is also upgraded. The destination host reads the qcow2 as raw ouch! The VM on the destination has the driver type='raw'/ with virsh dumpxml. [Bug 671021] Re: kill -9 kvm crashes ssh daemon
I have an additional data point: the ssh daemon does not actually crash, it just stops responding for a few minutes. The connection was left intact during today's experiment, but no input was processed. It looks like a frozen connection, but it did come back into an active state eventually. Here is the auth.log tail. I usually have resolved the problem by going to webmin and restarting the ssh daemon, but today I was slower to initiate that webmin login, when I noticed the SSH connection was actively accepting input again: Nov 6 18:08:02 server1 sudo: myuser : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/myuser ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/aptitude upgrade Nov 6 18:10:02 server1 sshd[20626]: Received disconnect from XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: 11: disconnected by user Nov 6 18:10:02 server1 sshd[20610]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for user myuser Nov 6 18:10:18 server1 sudo: myuser : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/myuser ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/ps ax Nov 6 18:10:26 server1 sudo: myuser : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/myuser ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/kill -9 1354 Nov 6 18:15:08 server1 perl[21100]: pam_unix(webmin:session): session opened for user myuser by (uid=0) Nov 6 18:15:08 server1 sudo: myuser : TTY=pts/1 ; PWD=/usr/share/webmin ; USER=root ; COMMAND=list Nov 6 18:15:08 server1 webmin[21100]: Successful login as myuser from XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Nov 6 18:15:42 server1 sudo: myuser : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/myuser@ ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/ps ax Nov 6 18:17:01 server1 CRON[21239]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0) Nov 6 18:17:01 server1 CRON[21239]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root This test is still with the Windows 2003 VM, BTW. -- kill -9 kvm crashes ssh daemon https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/671021 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
Re: [Bug 665235] Re: attaching a volume to maverick instance may boot off it
On Sat, 6 Nov 2010, Eric Hammond wrote: EBS volumes and snapshots create this sort of problem regularly for me, generally with conflicting duplicate XFS UIDs which I have to override. The best solution for EC2 AMIs may be to always accept that /dev/sda1 is the boot disk. Well, I chose to use label because LABEL= is much newer way of booting, and with UUID even more so. I would have used UUID, but at the time that the initial /boot/grub/menu.lst is written in the vmbuilder code, there is no UUID because the filesystem has not been written yet (its in a chroot). update-grub-legacy-ec2 is what ends up writing this. That is largely a copy of 'update-grub' from the 'grub' package (not grub2). I intentionally left as much the same as I could get a way with. Because of that, the problem is even further complicated because when update-grub-legacy-ec2 runs (on kernel installation or dpkg-reconfigure), it will end up writing with UUID (which is its prefered mechanism). That behavior was generally OK to me, but can cause other issues (just as label does) like bug 671427. /dev/sda1 does seem like the simplest answer, but its not ideal for 2 reasons a.) /dev/sda1 is really not what the device should be named (we carry a patch to turn xen pv disk devices from xvdX to sdX) b.) on UEC (and on openstack) the root device is likely to be named /dev/vda1. This is not *really* a problem, as grub2 loads the kernels on UEC and pv-grub via update-grub-legacy-ec2's /boot/grub/menu.lst does so on ec2. So, lost of info there, but thats why its not as simple as it might first appear. -- attaching a volume to maverick instance may boot off it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/665235 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to cloud-init in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

I tried the same steps and did not get /dev/sdh as the root, but I see that they do both have the same label, and concur that labels may not be the best way to differentiate these volumes. I would recommend for you to clean up your installation packages by running in the terminal the following command: sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoremove 3. If you are still running 8.04, I would strongly recommend, after you perform step 1 and 2, to upgrade to at least 10.04 (which is a long term release) or 10.10. Hello Erik, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and help us make Ubuntu better! It would appear that your passwd file was locked for some reason: useradd: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later. adduser: `/usr/sbin/useradd -d /var/run/xrdp -g xrdp -s /bin/false -u 117 xrdp' returned error code 1. Exiting. You may want to check to see if there are currently running programs that have it locked with fuser -v /etc/passwd This should show any processes with /etc/passwd opened and/or locked. It may also be easier to reboot, and then attempt the update again. I confirm this bug on Ubuntu Maverick (i386). The bug is not present on Lucid, with the version of GIMP backported from maverick. [Bug 666601] Re: Xorg does not dump core (via file nor Apport) on crash
Thanks for that, Gustavo. I would just add two things to your instructions: 1. ulimit -c unlimited at some point, so that ulimit doesn't prevent a core file from being generated; 2. Remember to specify the display, e.g. DISPLAY=:0 gnome-session :-) Even with all that, if Apport is enabled, you don't get a core dump. The only way you get a core is if Apport is disabled (i.e. core_pattern specifies a file instead of a pipe). Very odd. [Bug 669770] Re: Many windows can not be resized to a smaller size. Unable to select options below
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! -- Many windows can not be resized to a smaller size.
