The only thing that seems to prevent this error for me is running an
older kernel. I'm running 2.6.32-22 now without any trouble. I haven't
checked at exactly what kernel version things start to go wrong, and I
don't think I will because I don't want to risk corrupting my data.

Over the weekend I moved the suspect drive to the SATA controller and it

After startup it takes about 70-80MB of RAM. Now my compiz process chews ~250MB
after about 5 days of uptime.
This never happened with Maverick. I didn't check compiz memory usage with
Ubuntu Classic desktop on Natty.
