This is a simple test case that shows the problem using python
logging.config.
Just run it with:
./python-logging-syslog.py my message
It will output to console the same string it should be writing to syslog.
However, the one to syslog is messed up. (tail -f /var/log/syslog).

It seems that this is related the nvidia driver. Using the nouveau
driver allows the display to be shown in the list and available for
selection.

I got the same problems after upgrading to Oneiric (no mount, shutdown,
suspend). For me, there wasn't the autologin line in
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf so that didn't help. I tried downgrading
lightdm to 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.1 from 1.2, didn't help. Finally I switched to
gdm.

First a correction of a mistake: The key which toggles Side Pane show /
no show in Thunar is F9.
I would suggest amendments the following three places:
In Thunar View Side Pane (menu):
add an entry in this menu with tick box as follows: [ ] Show Side Pane F9
In Thunar
Try adding this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, in the Device section:
Option OnDemandVBlankInterrupts True
Supposedly this is a power-saving function, but I find it also gives me
a nearly tear-free desktop.
