I think I was able to fix it by manually changing the apt-get sources
from natty to oneric and removing one problematic 32-bit library package
that the update was complaining about. I also had to do some other post
install fixes, like updating grub to work with the 3.x kernel

I recently installed the i386 Kubuntu cd on a Laptop and on Virtualbox
(to reproduce) and I can confirm that upgrades for Kubuntu are currently
in a broken state, because after install it will prompt users for an
upgrade, that will stall without any error message. I guess it depends

I have installed a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 i386 and the sound fx of volume
increase/decrease works. After install all the suggested upgrades and
after reboot the sound disappear. The audio works good and the command
increase/decrease volume works too, but can't hear that pop!
Can you start sound-juicer from the terminal and reproduce the error?
This should give more specific clues on the error. I'd then suggest
trying the --device=/dev/cdrom (or whatever /dev/ link points to your cd
device) argument to see if that helps.
