I have reason to believe that this issue is now resolved for me with
Linux 3.8.0-31, which appears to be the healthiest kernel so far without
resorting to trying the mainline kernel.
After already a number of boot-ups, I'm pleased to say that I've not
suffered from any black screen of death
the configurator is not part of xorg, so if you could move the other bug
to whatever component lubuntu/lxde has that would be nice
