Christopher,
The bug report is about exporting to PNG (see title), so saying Won't
fix because export to SVG is deprecated seems odd.
The only reason SVG got mentioned in this bug report is because it
appears to be the only format that *isn't* broken.
Can confirm that PNG PDF are both broken
Some notes:
1) The contents of /var/log/lightdm.log aren't being touched - so perhaps
it's not getting that far?
2) Hmm /var/log/upstart/lightdm.log

/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
Ok, I think I've found the confusion. This bug got linked to the wrong
upstream bug. The upstream bug linked is gnome-bugs #735493 which is
about SVG.
It should be linked to the following bugs (which I've tried to do):
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=714296
At first I thought that's because of Audacity lens. I uninstalled it, but the
issue persisted and only under my user.

Title:
adding vlc to the blacklisted-media-players key
I run the release upgrade from a completely up-to-date 12.04 from the Update
Manager and it completed without problem. After the upgrade had finished I
performed the restart and faced the
grub rescue
prompt and got puzzled understandably.
Then I searched and found this bug and figured out that
Yes, this bug is in upstream GNOME.
