[Bug 160679] No sound when muted in windows

2007-11-07 Thread Alexander Menk
Public bug reported:

On a Toshiba Tecra A9 I couldn't get sound to work with Ubuntu. Later I found
out that I have to unmute the sound in Windows, then it work's in Ubuntu out of
the box.
The problem is, that this mute-state is invisible in Ubuntu. I unmuted all, but
couldn't get any sound.

The mute-state setting by windows also affects the BIOS (which normally
beeps)

Possible explanation: The muting is done on some lower hardware level
(ACPI) ? But that should be switchable by linux...

Complete Sound-hardware-details can be found here:

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2007-11-07 Thread johnny9537
Okay so I have been running almost a day using my computer a lot and it
has not frozen yet (compared to every hour)! I disabled the Desktop Cube
and reverted back to Desktop Wall (animations still on but I did turn
off the focus animation)... Can others that are having the same issue
try this and post your results??? I will keep the computer going and see
if it freezes but I am optimistic. I will refrain, for now, from stating
that it looks like the bug is in the Desktop Cube ;)

[Bug 155862] Re: Firefox crashed very often

2007-11-07 Thread pzajac
I cannot find any .crash dump now :(. I tried to install brand new
version of firefox from mozilla website. It is still crashing. For
example after logging to www.gmail.com. I would like to help more. I was
developing a lot in C/C++ in past. How can I debug the firefox? Is
there any howto?

Output of application:

The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 120 error_code 8 request_code 146 minor_code 3)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

respective styles properly
3. Begin with a CTRL-B to turn ON Bold font style and type This should be

4. Toggle Bold using CTRL-B (to turn it OFF) and continue, repeating This
should be normal.
5. Toggle Bold again with CTRL-B (to turn it ON again) and continue typing --

[Bug 160683] vmware-server: Package requests recursive update

2007-11-07 Thread Cliff Cunnington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vmware-server

Since this morning (Nov7), this package is recursively requesting
upgrade to the same version number (1.0.3-1).

In my first upgrade, 'apt-get dist-upgrade' reinstalled the apt-cached
version of this package version. That package was about two weeks old.

Before the second upgrade attempt, I deleted the apt-cached version of the
package to allow 'apt-get' to download and install the current repository
package[*], currently dated 6-Nov-2007.

The package installed successfully, but it is *still* requesting
upgrade via update-manager notification and 'apt-get dist-upgrade':

[Bug 148070] Re: KeyJnote failing Error: pdftoppm produced an unreadable file (page 1)

2007-11-07 Thread Martin Zuther
If you can't adapt Marc's command for yourself, then download the patch,
move it to your home directory, open the shell (Terminal) and type:

  cd /usr/share/keyjnote
  sudo patch --backup keyjnote.py ~/keyjnote_v10.0.patch

You have to run patch as superuser (sudo), otherwise you'll get an
error. This command also creates a backup of the original file
(--backup), which is always a good idea if things go wrong, and loads
the patch file from your home directory (~). :)

[Bug 145112] Re: Random NVidia Proprietary Driver Lock-Ups solution + 7300

2007-11-07 Thread ELPEarl
To all
Had this same problem with the 7300GS on Suse 10.1-10.3 but found this solution
at NV using the text of the following file. When you run the first run file
with the --apply-patch qualilfier it creates a patched custom that can now be
run normally. What I think the patch might be doing is shutting off agp in
order to run the newer style of card PCI Express. (guessing)

Check out this thread about halfway down.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87918page=7highlight=freezes

Note: I did have to change the names to match the downloaded run file
from Nvidia. Since running this patch I haven't had a lockup other than
with k3b and its 'second burn lockup'. Any glx app like GoogleEarth or
Blender froze the system for sure before the patch. Now I am really
enjoying these apps. Hope this helps you others with the problem.

I did try the patch on the latest 100.14.19 without success. Seems that
even though the author is at Nvidia the patch is not standard to the
driver.

In the middle of a piece of music the old driver (100.14.11) Started a 1
second loop of the song and if I tried to use the keyboard to rescue
myself out of X I couldn't even use the 5sec holddown of the off button
to turn off and restart the system. I had to go to the back of the
machine and toggle the machine off and back on which is the same as
pulling the plug out of the wall. Really locked to be sure. ZANDER is
the contact person at NVIDIA.

If the patch process works, let others know, If it doesn't also let us know
though it does work for me.
To apply the patch, use:
# sh /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg2.run --apply-patch
/path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-100.14.11-336672.diff.txt

Indeed, it was interesting! I have had evolution running on another
workspace, but it had not touched the drive. Instead, it were kjournald
and pdflush. I have left the laptop idle for 5 minutes with three
programs open (well, those I don't have in auto startup): Evolution,
 Gnome-terminal and Pidgin.

Note that kjournald and pdflush are kernel processes that write
expired data out to disk. To be precise, pdflush writes the data, and
kjournald does the ext3 journalling. This means that some processes that
you were running modified files earlier on, and then pdflush writes them
to disk 30 seconds later. Enable /proc/sys/vm/block_dump and check your
dmesg output to tell you when processes actually modify which files!
(But remember to _disable syslogd_ while you do this!)

[Bug 43248] Re: (TOSHIBA TE2100) NVIDIA Graphic card driver problem

2007-11-07 Thread Coolcar
I am facing this issue in Gutsy 7.10
When I enable the Ubuntu restricted driver for nVIDIA and reboot the screen
becomes blank. The only way to recover is to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and
set the driver back to default - nv.

The hardware on the Toshiba TE2100 is NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go]

I have even tried using the Envy package to install the nVIDIA drivers
but same issue. I read somewhere in the forums that we should disable
splash screens to make it work but I have not tried it.

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2007-11-07 Thread tccom
Hi,
I have a suggest. Follow these steps:

1) install feisty
2) upgrade feisty installation
3) verify all is ok (also graphical effects like cube and exposè)
4) upgrade distribution to gutsy with System-Administration-Updates Manager

These 4 steps work for me in 3 configuration: 2 with ATI graphic cards
(Radeon X300 PCIE, Raedon Mobility X600) and one with Nvidia graphic
card (geforce 7200 GS 256 mb PCIE). For Nvidia card, i've enabled
suggested restricted driver (with System-administration-restricted

i hope this helps

[Bug 160686] Font style toggle buttons do not work correctly

2007-11-07 Thread JBLingan
Public bug reported:

The problem occurs using OpenOffice.org 2.3 word processing module.

In the following steps use CTRL+B to toggle the Bold font style where
indicated by [CTR+B]. To reproduce this problem it is IMPORTANT that
you DO NOT PRESS ENTER. The problem occurs when trying to toggle the
Bold effect on and off within an unbroken sentence.

BEGIN WITH A NEW DOCUMENT and type the following sentence pressing
[CTRL+B] where indicated:

[CTRL+B]This will appear Bold; [CTRL+B]This will appear normal;
[CTRL+B]This should be Bold but is not.

Note that prior to typing anything, the Bold, Italic, and Underline
toggles function normally. Apparently, the failure occurs when the
feature is called the second time. This is probably a minor bug
involving a flag. I have not looked at the source code so I'm just
guessing. I hope you find it--this is VERY ANNOYING. Contact me if you
need more information: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 }
 }
 ##Config file ends##

Of course the configuration is fine.
My last message lacked crucial detail though.
On further inspection I find something more interesting. There are two
obvious ways to generate an error message (or no error message)

My blank error message was caused by not having root privilege at the moment
that I called dhcp3-server and it started successfully when I did sudo it. As
I stated in my last message, it only stated the error after I had reverted
your edit to the script dhcp3-server
 BUT
Fixing the error output for permissions problems breaks the output for config
 file problems..

So your fix perfectly solved the problem, but there seems to be some other
problem, perhaps this should be in a different bug report..?
 To put it differently:

/usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -q -cf $CONFIG_FILE only prints an error WITHOUT sudo
 /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf $CONFIG_FILE 21| sed '1,4d' only prints an error
 WITH sudo

I still don't feel that's very clear. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, it's clear.
The idea of having a line like:

/usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf $CONFIG_FILE 21| sed '1,4d'

is to test the configuration file syntax, mainly in the event of a restart in a
production environment.
If you've introduced and error in your config you don't want that your server
stops and never restarts (leaving you running to fix the config and start
again), you want instead that the new config syntax is checked before stopping
the server.
Personally, I think that the problem is in dhcpd3 (and perhaps the fix too). To
only test the syntax (-t) of a config file you have read access there's no need
to drop privileges.
From dhcpd3 man page:

If the -t flag is specified, the server will simply
test the configuration file for correct syntax, but will not attempt to
perform any network operations.

[Bug 133315] Re: at least, four wrong language imports for gutsy

2007-11-07 Thread Axel Bojer
The reason why I mentioned the norwegian bug, is that the bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/155052
where I initially started writing about this, was marked as a duplicate of this
bug.
So I then assume that norwegian *is* relevant and a part of this bug too :-)

I am now closing this bug:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=150729

I suppose that the Kubuntu team will make new packages without this bug, any
idea when this could happen?
As someone could happen to ask me about it, it would be nice to know how long
this have to be fixed manually :-)

[Bug 125139] Re: iftab - persistent rules transition can break existing setups

2007-11-07 Thread cfrein
On upgrading from feisty to gutsy with a do-release-upgrade iftab was
not correctly converted.

The former mac-address in iftab was uppercase, but udev refers to lowercase and
so created a new device:
---
 cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

# Converted from /etc/iftab on upgrade
SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, ATTRS{address}==00:0C:29:F1:74:5D,
NAME=eth0

# PCI device 0x1022:0x2000 (pcnet32)
SUBSYSTEM==net, DRIVERS==?*, ATTRS{address}==00:0c:29:f1:74:5d,
NAME=eth1

---
cat /etc/iftab
##eth0 mac 00:0C:29:F1:74:5D
---

This broke the network-configuration of the server.

[Bug 17216] Re: Hard drive spindown should be configurable

2007-11-07 Thread ubuntu_demon
* (laptop) harddisk firmwares and (laptop) BIOSes might set too aggressive
power management (operating system independent)
* The operating system and the applications running on it might cause too much
unnecessary disk activity (multiple operating systems are affected. at least a
couple of Linux distributions seem to have the same problem)
The result : is rapid parking/unparking cycles of the harddisk's head (a
rapidly increasing Load_Cycle_Count).

IMHO this is the way Ubuntu should fix this :

IMHO Ubuntu should make fixing unnecessary disk activity bugs a high priority.
We can all help finding unnecessary disk activity bugs.
IMHO Ubuntu should override too aggressive power management and make this also
a high priority.
IMHO smartmontools should be installed on default. smartd should run on default
with sane settings hooking into a notifier to notify users. At least some
people who were affected might be warned in time to buy a new harddrive. Maybe
this should be a Hardy goal ?

Laptop-mode with sane default settings can override too aggressive power
management settings and can also prevent some unnecessary disk activity.
Maybe Ubuntu should enable laptop-mode with sane default settings for
laptops. What do you guys think ? What are sane default settings ?

Some suggestions for laptop-mode parameters :

http://www.nabble.com/-Cooker--Laptop-hard-drives-and-unnecessarily-high-Load_Cycle_Count-t4730198.html

Regarding smartd hooking into a notifier. I'm thinking of the following example
situations when to warn a user :
* if the Load_Cycle_Count is increased with more than 22 cycles per hour (22 *
24 * 365 * 3 600.000) (to find people who are still affected)
* if smartctl assesses your harddrive as not healthy
* if more than X errors were found during the last self-test
* if Load_Cycle_Count's WORST is within Y of Load_Cycle_Count's THRESHOLD

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2007-11-07 Thread Piotr Gawrysiak
Refto desktop cube - I am using default desktop wall, but still
experience freezes :( Last one yesterday - after activating show
desktop (but I am not saying that the bug is related to this particular
plugin, I think it is somewhere in the compiz core as it obviously
manifests itself also while using other special effects).

One curious observation - after the freeze I again have been able to
switch to virtual console (after unfreezing keyboard with Alt-
Sysrq-R). compiz.real was consuming nearly 100% cpu. I killed it, and
when I switched back to X display (i.e. Alt-F7) I noticed that the gui
is no longer frozen (I was downloading something in firefox, and I could
see that the download window was showing increasing download progress
etc.). I was however unable to click on anything with the mouse (but I
guess that is normal behaviour fater terminating compiz.real process) or
use the keyboard.

Hope it helps...

[Bug 160696] Compiz Blur - Residual Frame

2007-11-07 Thread Officer Dibble
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When Blur Windows is enabled I will occasionally be left with the
outline of a closed window on my desktop which will remain there until I
restart, or as I recently discovered, until I disable Blur Windows in
the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.

The best way I can describe it is as a shadowy outline of a window that
has been closed which remains on top of any window opened afterwards. It
is guaranteed to happen to the window used to enter my root password
when accessing Administration menus such as Synaptic Package Manager - a
shadow of the password window will stain the desktop.

[Bug 152912] Re: pam configuration could use safer defaults

2007-11-07 Thread lcars

Well I am telling you that sufficient + sufficient for pam_ldap and pam_unix in
common-auth leads to any user being able to log in with blank password. So
something is not behaving properly here. Your assumption re sufficient +
sufficient (which I though too it was right) is incorrect, I tested this.

Cheers

[Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io

2007-11-07 Thread timduk
As a first time Ubuntu user/installer/developer (7.10 64-bit gusty goatee or
suchlike), here's my 2-cents worth.
(trackerd version 0.6.3 on Pentium 3.4 dual with 2Gb ram)

Almost everything has been impressive, apart from some very irritating
periodic system freezes and an unresponsive gui. These almost made me
give up on Ubuntu.

I have spent the best part of 2 days trying to get dual-head *something
working other than looking at cloned versions of a desktop. Whenever
logging back in to see what the latest changes have done, something has
kicked in and caused everything and anything to do with windowing to
almost freeze, giving the impression that there's a problem in the
graphics changes that have just been made.

I discovered trackerd and it's cpu hogging by accident, having given up
on the dual head thing and moved on to installing netbeans, in order to
get some proper work done. When netbeans started to freeze, I had a look
at cpu usage and discovered the culprit. A google for Ubuntu trackerd
revealed this and another thread.

This utility, in it's present state, blows big-time.
What on earth are you guys doing releasing this on an unsuspecting public? (ie.
me)

I do not want, or expect, any utility to hog my cpu to such an extent
that gui work is almost impossible, or the cooling fan is screaming non-
stop when the system is otherwise idle, no matter how good it is
supposed to be. Period.

Needless to say, the best advice received from this thread has been
uninstall - done.

[Bug 17216] Re: Hard drive spindown should be configurable

2007-11-07 Thread Chris Moore
In fact, I think that this issue was inaccurately
duped onto the Spindown Configurable bug

Quite possibly. The bug I reported is nothing to do with spindown or
load cycles since I get the clicking without the drive spinning down or
the load cycle count increasing, but that bug was duped here as well.

Can wrongly duped bugs be un-duped? Or is it better to make a new bug
report?

[Bug 3923] Re: Cannot change default character encoding

2007-11-07 Thread Haz
Above method does work reliably.
Only 1 of my Ubuntus will not accept it - but then it isn't reading the current
default locale of en_GB.UTF-8 either which is why its resorting to ANSI(ASCII).
I might try just reinstalling Gnome Terminal. The Ubuntu in question is a 6.06
LTS - but then others of these work OK.

Still it would be nice to have a Character Set option in GT Profiles.

[Bug 160704] [Gutsy] IMAP Ping error stops automatic mail check

2007-11-07 Thread Erdal Ronahi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using IMAP with Evolution. While I am online all the time, every 10
minutes my mail is checked.

Frequently I get an error like this:

Error while Pinging IMAP server mail.my-domain.com

This is a bit strange, since the mailserver is really reliable and has
no issues at all. But the real problem is, until I click this away
manually, Evolution will not check for mail again. Since I am running
Evolution minimized, I have to maximize it again and click away the
error message to get new mail. This makes the check automatically for
new mail function quite useless for me.

Expected behaviour:
Evolution may show the error message, but should nevertheless check again 10
minutes later when I am online.
