[Bug 145112] Re: Random NVidia Proprietary Driver Lock-Ups solution + 7300
To all Had this same problem with the 7300GS on Suse 10.1-10.3 but found this solution at NV using the text of the following file. When you run the first run file with the --apply-patch qualilfier it creates a patched custom that can now be run normally. What I think the patch might be doing is shutting off agp in order to run the newer style of card PCI Express. (guessing) Check out this thread about halfway down. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87918page=7highlight=freezes Note: I did have to change the names to match the downloaded run file from Nvidia. Since running this patch I haven't had a lockup other than with k3b and its 'second burn lockup'. Any glx app like GoogleEarth or Blender froze the system for sure before the patch. Now I am really enjoying these apps. Hope this helps you others with the problem. I did try the patch on the latest 100.14.19 without success. Seems that even though the author is at Nvidia the patch is not standard to the driver. In the middle of a piece of music the old driver (100.14.11) Started a 1 second loop of the song and if I tried to use the keyboard to rescue myself out of X I couldn't even use the 5sec holddown of the off button to turn off and restart the system. I had to go to the back of the machine and toggle the machine off and back on which is the same as pulling the plug out of the wall. Really locked to be sure. ZANDER is the contact person at NVIDIA. If the patch process works, let others know, If it doesn't also let us know though it does work for me. My last message lacked crucial detail though. On further inspection I find something more interesting. There are two obvious ways to generate an error message (or no error message) My blank error message was caused by not having root privilege at the moment that I called dhcp3-server and it started successfully when I did sudo it. As I stated in my last message, it only stated the error after I had reverted your edit to the script dhcp3-server BUT Fixing the error output for permissions problems breaks the output for config file problems.. So your fix perfectly solved the problem, but there seems to be some other problem, perhaps this should be in a different bug report..? To put it differently: /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -q -cf $CONFIG_FILE only prints an error WITHOUT sudo /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf $CONFIG_FILE 21| sed '1,4d' only prints an error WITH sudo I still don't feel that's very clear. Sorry for any confusion. Yes, it's clear. The idea of having a line like: /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf $CONFIG_FILE 21| sed '1,4d' is to test the configuration file syntax, mainly in the event of a restart in a production environment. If you've introduced and error in your config you don't want that your server stops and never restarts (leaving you running to fix the config and start again), you want instead that the new config syntax is checked before stopping the server. Personally, I think that the problem is in dhcpd3 (and perhaps the fix too). To only test the syntax (-t) of a config file you have read access there's no need to drop privileges. From dhcpd3 man page: If the -t flag is specified, the server will simply test the configuration file for correct syntax, but will not attempt to perform any network operations. -- Diego Torres Milano CULThttp://cult-thinclient.sf.net PXES Universal Linux Thin Clienthttp://pxes.org Have you read my blog ? http://dtmilano.blogspot.com -- dhcp3-server init script fails to show problem in configuration file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/94804 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 17216] Re: Hard drive spindown should be configurable
* (laptop) harddisk firmwares and (laptop) BIOSes might set too aggressive power management (operating system independent) * The operating system and the applications running on it might cause too much unnecessary disk activity (multiple operating systems are affected. at least a couple of Linux distributions seem to have the same problem) The result : is rapid parking/unparking cycles of the harddisk's head (a rapidly increasing Load_Cycle_Count). IMHO this is the way Ubuntu should fix this : IMHO Ubuntu should make fixing unnecessary disk activity bugs a high priority. We can all help finding unnecessary disk activity bugs. IMHO Ubuntu should override too aggressive power management and make this also a high priority. IMHO smartmontools should be installed on default. smartd should run on default with sane settings hooking into a notifier to notify users. At least some people who were affected might be warned in time to buy a new harddrive. Maybe this should be a Hardy goal ? Laptop-mode with sane default settings can override too aggressive power management settings and can also prevent some unnecessary disk activity. Maybe Ubuntu should enable laptop-mode with sane default settings for laptops. What do you guys think ? What are sane default settings ? Some suggestions for laptop-mode parameters : http://www.suselinuxsupport.de/wikka.php?wakka=HowToSaveYourLaptopHD http://mishameteo.blogspot.com/2007/10/ubuntu-default-acpi-settings-decreases.html http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=294594#p294594 http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=393299sid=46e5b548a1693fcf6f7e15316f904360#393299 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695/comments/63 http://www.nabble.com/-Cooker--Laptop-hard-drives-and-unnecessarily-high-Load_Cycle_Count-t4730198.html Regarding smartd hooking into a notifier. I'm thinking of the following example situations when to warn a user : * if the Load_Cycle_Count is increased with more than 22 cycles per hour (22 * 24 * 365 * 3 600.000) (to find people who are still affected) * if smartctl assesses your harddrive as not healthy * if more than X errors were found during the last self-test * if Load_Cycle_Count's WORST is within Y of Load_Cycle_Count's THRESHOLD I found the following wiki pages with similar ideas : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDownUnder/BOFs/SMARTMonitoring https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DiskMonitoring -- Hard drive spindown should be configurable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/17216 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards
Refto desktop cube - I am using default desktop wall, but still experience freezes :( Last one yesterday - after activating show desktop (but I am not saying that the bug is related to this particular plugin, I think it is somewhere in the compiz core as it obviously manifests itself also while using other special effects). One curious observation - after the freeze I again have been able to switch to virtual console (after unfreezing keyboard with Alt- Sysrq-R). compiz.real was consuming nearly 100% cpu. I killed it, and when I switched back to X display (i.e. Alt-F7) I noticed that the gui is no longer frozen (I was downloading something in firefox, and I could see that the download window was showing increasing download progress etc.). I was however unable to click on anything with the mouse (but I guess that is normal behaviour fater terminating compiz.real process) or use the keyboard. [Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io
As a first time Ubuntu user/installer/developer (7.10 64-bit gusty goatee or suchlike), here's my 2-cents worth. (trackerd version 0.6.3 on Pentium 3.4 dual with 2Gb ram) Almost everything has been impressive, apart from some very irritating periodic system freezes and an unresponsive gui. These almost made me give up on Ubuntu. I have spent the best part of 2 days trying to get dual-head *something working other than looking at cloned versions of a desktop. Whenever logging back in to see what the latest changes have done, something has kicked in and caused everything and anything to do with windowing to almost freeze, giving the impression that there's a problem in the graphics changes that have just been made. I discovered trackerd and it's cpu hogging by accident, having given up on the dual head thing and moved on to installing netbeans, in order to get some proper work done. When netbeans started to freeze, I had a look at cpu usage and discovered the culprit. A google for Ubuntu trackerd revealed this and another thread. This utility, in it's present state, blows big-time. What on earth are you guys doing releasing this on an unsuspecting public? (ie. me) I do not want, or expect, any utility to hog my cpu to such an extent that gui work is almost impossible, or the cooling fan is screaming non- stop when the system is otherwise idle, no matter how good it is supposed to be. [Bug 154214] Re: Restricted Manager fails to start with Russian, Finnish, Romanian or Japanese localization packs.
This is a fresh crash report from network manager. It never starts, only crashes. And then apport crashes when trying to report. Why is this bug marked as fixed? Or is my bug report NOT a duplicate of this after all? -- Restricted Manager fails to start with Russian, Finnish,Romanian or Japanese localization packs. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154214 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 3923] Re: Cannot change default character encoding
Above method does work reliably. Only 1 of my Ubuntus will not accept it - but then it isn't reading the current default locale of en_GB.UTF-8 either which is why its resorting to ANSI(ASCII). I might try just reinstalling Gnome Terminal. The Ubuntu in question is a 6.06 LTS - but then others of these work OK. Still it would be nice to have a Character Set option in GT Profiles. -- Cannot change default character encoding https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/3923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 160704] [Gutsy] IMAP Ping error stops automatic mail check
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I am using IMAP with Evolution. While I am online all the time, every 10 minutes my mail is checked. Frequently I get an error like this: Error while Pinging IMAP server mail.my-domain.com This is a bit strange, since the mailserver is really reliable and has no issues at all. But the real problem is, until I click this away manually, Evolution will not check for mail again. Since I am running Evolution minimized, I have to maximize it again and click away the error message to get new mail. This makes the check automatically for new mail function quite useless for me. Expected behaviour: Evolution may show the error message, but should nevertheless check again 10 minutes later when I am online.
