Chuck, that looks much better already. However, the changelog says nut

 right and intended?

This comment suggests that a fix to the problem is adding the user nut
to the group dialout. Do I understand correctly?

I had done this already to handle permissions on the port my UPS was
attached to. That is, the owner.group for /dev/ttyS0 is root.dialout and
so to get nut to work one has to do an adduser nut dialout.

Doing an adduser nut nut, which fixes the problem, seems to me to be a
hack, not a proper fix. I ask again, when the code was built, was the
argument -with-user=nut given to configure?

[Bug 120086] Re: [needs-packaging] add tomcat 6

2008-04-29 Thread Loris-Guillaume Minoia
I'm going to test this out once the intrepid opens. If possible could you add
this into bzr in launchpad ?
in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BzrMaintainerHowto, it's written:
* If the package is intended for main, then the team should be
ubuntu-core-dev.
* If the package is intended for universe, then the team should be
ubuntu-dev.
what's the team for multiverse, as it needs java2 and for now, there is none in
main, neither universe: http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/java2-compiler

 - It would make sense to include previous changelog entries as the package is
based to tomcat5.5 packaging and also credit the original packagers.
I packaged it from scratch, with great inspiration from the tomcat5.5 package,
(with exception of the policy.d directory that i evily copied), but this is
sufficient for a credit.

 - Providing and using dedicated user, tomcat6, would be better security-wise
 at least
ok
 - Using port 8080, might cause trouble with existing servlet containers.
Maybe default to something like 8280 as the tomcat5.5 package is using 8180
nod
 - Not sure about the mod_jk addition to server.xml, seems unnecessary?
it is not necessary, but the purpose of a distribution is not just to
./configure,make;make install. I should put either more jk integration, or
just none, it's a good question
 - tomcat6 package probably needs java2-sdk in Depends as JDK is required to
 run tomcat
it uses the eclipse compiler (libecj-java) to compile jsp pages

[Bug 208419] Re: Integrate samba password in PAM

  * 02_install_missing_samba.dpatch:
   - install libpam-smbpass in addition to samba (LP: #208419)

Unfortunately this is only partial fix, it works only when user hasn't
both packages - samba and libpam-smbpass in his system. If user has
samba package already installed then nautilus-share doesn't install
libpam-smbpass package :(

It's very easy to reproduce:
1. install samba and do not install libpam-smbpass package (remove it if it's
already installed)
2. Press right click on any subfolder from your home folder and choose Sharing
Option from menu.
3. Click on Share this folder and then click button Create Share

As you see - you can share a folder even if you haven't libpam-smbpass
installed and you don't get a dialog with suggestion to install needed
libpam-smbpass package :(

Btw, AFAIK nautilus-share package should have libpam-smbpass package in
Recommends or Suggests field, like samba package.

I can report this as separate bugreport, just tell me :)

[Bug 224317] [NEW] Minimal rights samba share

2008-04-29 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

I have a samba-share (on a Dapper-server) mounted through /etc/fstab:
//lin01/public /media/lin01-public cifs
lfs,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,codepage=cp850,iocharset=utf8 0 0

I can browse the share without a problem, but when I try to write,
rights are not set appropriate, so to spweak, they are minimal. Only
after a unmount/mount-cycle, the normal rights appear.

Steps to reproduce:

# Map has full rights initially:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media/lin01-public/Data$ ls -l ..
drwxrwxrwx 4 root root 0 2008-04-29 19:19 Data

# Create a file:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media/lin01-public/Data$ echo test test.txt

# Check rights of created file (now: minimal):
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media/lin01-public/Data$ ls -l test.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5 2008-04-29 19:21 test.txt

# umount mount
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo umount /media/lin01-public/
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo mount -a

# Check rights of created file (now: full):
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media/lin01-public/Data$ ls -l test.txt
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2008-04-29 19:21 test.txt

This worked OK in Gutsy, so this is a regression in Hardy

Also tried different mount-options, all with no effect:
- smbfs (instead of cifs), depricated
- fmask (instead of file_mode), depricated
- dmask (instead of dir_mode), depricated

Obviously it wasn't because the problem is still there and using:

does not fix the problem. Likewise will work for that session but once a
reboot is done you cannot login and get the phantom Error box.

[Bug 223424] [NEW] Samba Local Area Network File Transfewr BUG

2008-04-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the new hardy version the Samba Network Manger will not send my files
to my windows XP computer that is on the TCP/IP network with the
copy/cut paste command.

I found that I can send files to my windows XP computer by draging and
droping them to the windows xp share folder that now gets mounted to the
desktop in the new hardy version when accessing a network share.

To me this is very serious bug that keep people from accessing there
data.

My Windows XP Machine is Pre Service Pack 1 with no Firewall or antvirus
nothing its just a backup file server that does nothing more that hold
files with a no software or updates installed on it just Windows XP Home
raw nothing more.

Dear Mathias,
As I said, I experienced a similar problem with ftp shares, NOT with smb.
However, I tried out what you said and it is working.
But with the ftp is still not working. It seems the Nautilus tries to use a
simple ftp get for directories too.

Could you confirm that using a dynamic IP with windows works correctly

Yes, all of my Windows workstations talk to AD with dynamic IPs.

Could you check if the hostname is resolvable (both hostname to IP and
IP to hostname) when using a dynamic IP with Hardy ?

Hostname to IP: works fine.
IP to hostname: can't be found.

Could you compare with using a dynamic IP with windows ?

Hostname to IP: 192.168.1.3

I have found a temporary solution to getting files sent to my Windows XP

Copy/Cut files and pasating them to my XP Machine still does not work
but if I simply drag and drop the file I want to send to the XP Machine
folder mount that is on the desktop when samba connects to the machine
that is on the network. I take the file I want and drag and drop over
the folder mount that is on the desktop and the file is sent to the
networked XP machine.

[Bug 216482] Re: banshee crashed because it kept loading songs

The crash looks like it's aMSN and wish8.5 (which I think is tk/tcl

I'm going to allocate this to tk and amsn.

[Bug 214736] Re: screen dims on boot

2008-04-29 Thread Bertilo
acpi_osi=Linux has no effect for me either.

I use Kubuntu 8.04 on a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop. I did a fresh install
of Hardy.

I get this dimming on every boot, at exactly the same point - somewhere
around when the hardware drives are being loaded. When the desktop is
fully loaded the brightness comes back automatically. But the login
screen is quite dark.

The same thing happens at shutdown, and the reduced brightness then
remains at the beginning of the next boot. I can however get the
brightness up with the brightness keys, but only if I do it quickly at
the very start. But the dimming then occurs again when the harware
drivers are being loaded.

The brightness buttons on my laptop work at the start of the boot
process, but then stop working as soon as the brightness drops. When the
brightness automatically comes back (when the desktop is loaded), they
start working again.

The same dimming also occurs every time I start VLC. It also happens
when I switch off Enable power saving in KDE Control Center.
(Reenebling the power saving however does not resurrect the brightness.)

I can always get the brightness back to normal if click on the Power
Manager applet, and then change the brightness setting there. The
brightness control there is set to maximum, although the actual
brightness is very low. Changing the setting to something else (doesn't
matter what) gets things back to normal (I usually take it down a notch,
and then back up to maximum).

I can also - sometimes - get things back to normal if I touch anything
in Monitor Display - Size, orientation Positioning (in the Control
Center), but that part of the Control Center behaves strangely and
unpredictably.

Those solutions are of course just temporary. All I need to do to dim
the screen, is to start VLC, or reboot.

Nothing like this happend in Gutsy, neither in Ubuntu nor in Kubuntu. I
haven't seen it on any other version either. It started with one of the
beta or RC versions of the Live CD, and it remains in the final release.
It's very annoying.

[Bug 194864] Re: F-Spot crashes with SIGSEGV on open

2008-04-29 Thread Mark Duncan
Up to date Hardy and F-spot still doesn't work properly on AMD64. If I
go to a terminal and keep trying to run f-spot over and over again, it
will work about 1 in 20 times (the other 19 times, I get the same error
as the submitter). This is kind of embarrassing that a program that
ships as part of the default install doesn't even run. It makes Ubuntu
look like it was just kind of thrown together and not tested at all (I'm
not saying that's the case, but someone new to Ubuntu might think that).
Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

[Bug 185254] Re: system freeze after resume from suspend to RAM

2008-04-29 Thread Arnold J Noronha

Howdy!

I have the same issue, but with some interesting additions.

So my laptop is an nx6110, with a Pentium M processor. Suspend works
fine, but many a time resume results in a blank screen (I think its
still off), the hard disk light glows for some 10 seconds steadily and
then nothing happens.

Even at this seemingly crashed state I can resume by pressing the power
button many times: (it seems I have to press the power button for some 1
second and then leave it) after some three-four trials, voila -- it
resumes!

This is *not* a hardware issue, since it works fine with gutsy and some
older kernels (it breaks between 2.6.24-5 and 2.6.24-7)

Please let me know what kind of debug information should I get you, and
how to get it!

Thanks,

[Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver (no autoprobe, patch available)

2008-04-29 Thread Coz
Hey guys,
Well I did the Vincenzo patch and, with nvidia, Igor is correct it did not
maintain the nvidia settings in xorg and they had to be copied and pasted in .
however, as nicely as this works, it is not enough !!
This is unacceptable for handicapped individuals who require a wacom tablet to
function on a computer.
This is having someone jump through hoops which is the opposite of offering
accessibility features!!!
excuse me if I sound a bit irritated, however this lighting speed every six
month approach to ubuntu , at least in this case, is out of hand. I think
anyone who uses or requires wacom tablets would have been more than willing
to wait until auto detection was fixed. This patch is nice and it works with
some adjustments using nvidia, however i would never expect any of my
handicapped clients finding their way with this patch, which from their point
of view, would require them to pay me to fix the issue.
I dont know who creates the agenda list for the next version of ubuntu,
however when it comes to things that have already been implimented, ie wacom
tabelts autodetection, and it is not working on the new version of ubuntu,
then that particular issue should be high on the list of fixes, otherwise there
is no need for a new version if it steps backwards.
I apologize if i sound picky or aggressive here, but I do have handicapped
clients and I do tend to get very agressive when i see something like this
occur. In my opinion , this is mind boggling. Accessibility features must not
be seen as secondary issues to the working of the OS, it must be at the top of
the list of requirements for the system to be realesed.
I think it's irrelevant that it would push the release date to 8 months
instead of 6.

[Bug 188358] Re: No sound in VLC when playing a video with sound in Firefox + flash plugin

2008-04-29 Thread quentusrex
I have the exact same problem, but I don't think it's with only vlc. If
I have last.fm open, I can't play any movies with gstreamer. Even if
last.fm isn't playing any music, I still can't get gstreamer to play the
video properly, instead it plays at 1/20th of normal pace. Or if I open
the movies with vlc, then I get no sound. But if I close last.fm then
everything works just fine. Both vlc and gstreamer work.

[Bug 126555] Re: [apport] glipper crashed with SIGSEGV in IA__g_static_rw_lock_writer_lock()

2008-04-29 Thread Andrew Starr-Bochicchio

application, now it's a GNOME panel applet written in python. This bug
report is being closed as it is no longer relevant to the current code.

[Bug 223854] Re: middle-click the desktop switcher to launch Expo

2008-04-29 Thread David Prieto
Thanks nglnx,

I probably failed to make myself clear. There is, by default, no way to
launch the expo function of Compiz using only the mouse. To change this
users have to install an additional package and browse through its
options, which detracts from the feature's discoverability.

Compizconfig-settings-manager Lets you map this function to an edge or
corner of the screen, but the user might NOT want that. I for one have
buttons and menus in that area, so I'd probably end up launching expo
when I wanted to click the gnome menu or something. Middle-clicking a
workspace-related item like the desktop switcher, on the other hand,
would just make sense.

So that was not a question I was asking, actually, it was a feature I
was asking for. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

[Bug 219295] Re: device icons not shown on desktop

I confirm the identical behaviour on my Kubuntu 8.04.
It's a very frustrating problem.
The problem/bug came from Kubuntu 7.04.

Please consider this.

Thank you.

[Bug 152582] Re: gnome-app-install crashed with error in __init__()

2008-04-29 Thread SmartStuf
This was during an automatic upgrade from Gibbon to Heron the
upgrade seemed to run through OK... but when booted - although I could
get a desktop - ALL apps refused to work and generated various errors.
On clicking on the desktop icon the timer would be displayed but nothing
was dispayed to the screen. On checking the /var/crash/ directory I
discovered various crash files in there... this was one of them. I
don't specifically know when in the process any of the crash files were
created, but they will have been so during the upgrade process.

Sorry to be so vague but as written these occurred in the background
during the install/upgrade.

[Bug 224061] [NEW] package samba-common 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-04-29 Thread ZioNemo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

This might be a duplicate of the other reported bugs for this package,
but it happened in a different way, so I'm filing a separate bug.

NOTE: messages may be a bit off because I'm using the Italian version
and translating to English.

I was upgrading from Gutsy (fully updated) to Herdy using the provided
feature of the update manager.

After downloading it started upgrade proper.
When it come to Samba it displayed a box file samba.conf has been modified
locally, what should I do?;
It offered several alternatives (some absolutely identical! another bug?).
I chose show differences between the two files.
It failed immediately without showing anything.
I had then several other errors due to samba left unconfigured.
In /etc/samba/ I did not find any temporary (I expected to find something like
smb.conf-dpkg.new).

Best Regards and Many Thanks!
ZioNemo

[Bug 224060] [NEW] Erlang missing Tcl/Tk dependancy

2008-04-29 Thread chromex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: erlang

The Erlang module 'gs' depends upon Tcl/Tk to operate and yet when
Erlang is installed they are not included. This causes tools such as the
table viewer for Mnesia to not work even after installing the package
'erlang-x11'. This appears to be Hardy specific as the issue did not
come up with 7.10.

2008-04-29 Thread Mark twells
Thanks for the reply. Impressed!

It's a standard ubuntu 8.04 upgrade from a bog standard 6.06 install
using the 6.06 packages. I did an apt-get update-apt-get upgrade too,
beforehand.
