I agree with flaccid: This perpetuating and ennoying bug should be fixed as soon as possible! That has even become more important with Hardy, since smbfs does not exist as a workaround any more, smbmount being nothing more than a wrapper for mount.cifs. The simple solution proposed in the link quoted by flaccid is the same as what I mentionned above, changing the shutdown-sequence. Workaround, mount via cifs: In my case, I was trying to open my music folder on my Win2K3 server and getting the error. I found a workaround! (courtesy of prinknash on ubuntuforums) Follow it word for word (cut the text.. Apply command change.. paste the text.. Apply command change) 1. Go to System - Administration - Login Window. 2. Under 'General', press Edit commands ...' 3. Select 'Halt command' - in 'Path' box, cut the text in quotes (I.e. Shut down via gdm) - press Apply command change - paste the text back - press 'Apply command change' 4. Select 'Reboot command' and do as for 3. above Try restarting a couple of times and see if this has fixed the problem. Apparently this has fixed the problem for numerous people who have the boot splash but no shutdown splash. Now, could the solution/workaround give us a possible avenue to explore which might lead to a fix? I think this makes my first presumption correct. The networkmanager bug has nothing to do with this at all. The Line Graph shows less then 50% usage and the Pie Graph shows 33% usage but when I view memory usage in TOP I get a very diffrent result. A much lower result of free memory. Confirmed on my system with Hardy 8.04 on a T9300 Intel core duo CPU, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic (64 bit), KVM 1:62+dfsg-0ubuntu7, vmware-server 1.05 build-80187. Ubuntu freezes totally - you can't even ssh in from another PC. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bash I keep having Hardy freeze up on me. So far each time I have been in Firefox and the system locks up, no mouse, keyboard, or ctrl-alt-bksp don't work. I have to hold the power button in to turn off when this happens. I suspect the Nvidia drivers (169.12) since I never had this problem with Feisty or Gutsy. I have had Appearance|Visual Effects on Normal and just turned them off to see if this stops the problem. The Endgame screensaver seems to work so the Open GL I expect is functioning accelerated with the card. The card is a GeForce 7600 GS. hd(0,0) is mistake made here. In menu.lst there was (hd0,0), as you suggest. I have tried many diffrent entries, no verify and make active also. I even tried map. The reason of problem were not wrong commands in grub, but no files needed to boot Vista. BOOTMGR not found This message comes from Vista bootloader, which tries to start bootmgr. I think that instalation of grub has somehow destroyed those files. OK, my IBM X23 is now working using the binary drivers compiled by R.Rublack (thanks!) That is the 6.6.3 ATI drivers with ubuntu patches, compiled for X.org 1.4.0.90, ubuntu 8.04. I manually copied ati_drv.so and radeon_drv.so to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers , not using the package management. So they may well be overwritten on the next upgrade. I edited xorg.conf, changing vesa back to ati for the Device. [Bug 145107] Re: cannot create VPN connection in case of manual configuration
I experience similar to other posters. I have configured a manual connection to my Wireless AP at home (using static IP, dns, gateway etc), however when I left click on the network manager icon, I can see the VPN Connections tab, however when I click on my VPN connection, nothing happens. I created this VPN connection whilst in wireless roaming mode, prior to making changes to my local LAN setup. It used to work perfectly. Now, since I have disabled 'wireless roaming mode', it simply will not connect. Nothing happens. I feel this is either a bug in the code, or if not, it's most certainly a fairly high priority usability bug.
