Why doesn't linux-image-extra's postrm simply run update-initramfs. That
seems the more sensible thing to do as it is the same as with any other
package that wants to put things into the initrd.

I was having the same problem, and updating to 16.04.2 was the solution
for me, specifically
sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade
given that I was already running 16.04. The problem had also been

During boot from USB - hangs with
/init line 7 /sbin/udevadm: not found
Eventually lands at busybox.
Boot them with qemu and they work as expected.

You have to apply all the patches from the Debian package. I suggest to get
the git branch and do a dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -b

Thanks. Glad you took the time to reply. The bug report is five years
old, and I have long since upgraded to latest Ubuntu a few times.
On the other hand, I am thankful that Ubuntu is coming back into Gnome
proper going forward. I never was too enthused by the conflicts
inflicted by Unity bring
