After installing the qt-at-spi package I notice the same performance

Hi, I can reproduce a similar issue with synaptic, all the time. Please
let me know if someone else can reproduce this as well:
- Open a terminal
- run /usr/sbin/synaptic
- a dialog will appear to warn you about missing root privileges, click on
Close
- observe the window title: application name
Some more info, as I reproduced the bug again: the launcher is invoking the
LookupExtended DBus method on the /org/gnome/GConf/Database/0 object, and that
fails.
However gconftool-2 works, and it's invoking its methods on the
/org/gnome/GConf/Database/2 object.

I investigated the issue a bit, and according to my findings this is not
a bug in unity-2d: if I remove the unity-2d related names from the
RequiredProviders line in the /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions
/ubuntu-2d.session file, the flickering still happens.

I confirm this bug, and it really seems to be caused by nautilus. In
fact, if you disable nautilus autostart (by removing the
/etc/xdg/autostart/nautilus.desktop file), the desktop background will
not be painted.
Then, if you start nautilus -n manually from a terminal, you'll see
the desktop

Indeed, the issue that I experienced is what Florian described in bug 839610:
it's also visible in your video, when the background quickly shift to the right
by a few pixels. I couldn't reproduce the grey band on the left.
