I've tested this on hardy (i386) with all updates installed. The only
difference I can see at a glance is i386 vs amd64 with regards to testing this.

Rebuilding libgphoto2 without hal support (dropping libhal-dev build
dependency) works around this issue - apparantly the code in libgphoto2

No, this is a recent change which will be matched by the corresponding

I presume that at sometime in the past you ran F-Spot from universe,
from when it was using sqlite 2.x by default (this was changed early in
dapper development)
To convert your database, install both sqlite sqlite3, then run
'sqlite ~/.gnome2/f-spot/photos.db .dump | sqlite3
krb5-auth-dialog has been uploaded to edgy now.
