[Bug 1921345] Re: Support MIPI camera through Intel IPU6

2021-07-29 Thread Marcello Sylvester Bauer
> From kernel's point of view, there is still a known issue that it takes
> root priviledge to access these devices.

There is a way to run the gstreamer plugin as normal user via udev rule:
https://github.com/intel/icamerasrc/pull/9

The IPU6 processing subsystem does not use a V4l2 device node in contrast to
the Input system.
Therefore it is required to fix the access permission to `/dev/ipu-psys0`.

Same problem here, after upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to 20.10, nexcloud app
indicator in top bar disappeared.
I "killall nexcloud" and restart as per comment #3 above and icon reappear,

[Bug 1901554] [NEW] Install Ubuntu 20.10 crash at grub-install /dev/sda

2020-10-26 Thread marcello
Public bug reported:

Installing Ubuntu 20.10 from USB Live failed at gru-install /dev/sda!
I think problem has to do with UEFI/Legacy installation type.
My system has already Windows 10 installed on /dev/sda2 and ubuntu 20.04 on
/dev/sda7 in legacy mode, even if my system BIOS seems to support UEFI mode, I
never used it!
After the error if I open a terminal and try to enter command "grub-install
/dev/sda" it return:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/$ grub-install /dev/sda
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: error: cannot find EFI directory.

Re: [Bug 232172] Re: MASTER no wlan option for pppoe configuration

2020-09-22 Thread Marcello
Hey, no idea. As in the last 5 years pppoe as connection method has
been overtaken by new router types and broadband connections are (i
guess almost nowhere) paid by time anymore, so the need to connect and
disconnect every time is no longer required.
I can check, though, if the issue has been resolved.

2020-08-21 Thread Marcello Blancasio
A crash must be fixed, anyway.

I've experienced it myself. It can be easily replicated using a remote shell to
launch gnome-session in an Xvfb display:
Xvfb -ac :100 2> Xvfb.log &

export DISPLAY
gnome-session --session=ubuntu

After that, gdm crashed. I had gdm debug enabled and found this in the

[Bug 1887271] Re: Square rectangles instead of system fonts after upgrade (LANG=de_AT.UTF-8)

2020-07-18 Thread Marcello Bassani
I feel so sorry, but I did NOT continue with 20.04 - Focal Fossa, yet
downgraded to 18.04 via backup.
I couldn't even find out, where GnomeTweaks > Fonts is because EVERY SYSTEM
FONT was unreadable. I won't try to upgrade this machine furthermore. Please,
mark this thread as solved / unsolved.
Best Regards

P.S.: " 'journalctl -b 0' " might have been possible, yet my efforts
had been overdue, in my eyes.

2020-07-12 Thread Marcello Bassani
By the way, I'd tried to:

reinstall xorg xserver

gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface 'font-name' etc.

gnome-tweak-tools (changing/guessing fonts type)

fc-cache -v -r/etc (with restart)

install ttf-ancient-fonts

--> withOUT success

[Bug 1887271] [NEW] Square rectangles instead of system fonts after upgrade

2020-07-12 Thread Marcello Bassani
Public bug reported:

After upgrading my room mate's Fujitsu Esprimo Desktop PC to 20.04
Focal Fossa (from Bionic 18.04):

Any system font line is being displayed distorted / erroneous / in sort
of placeholder blocks or SQUARE RECTANGLES, as if the fonts set wouldn't
be installed at all... Tthe 'gsettings'-procedure from some link
mentioned on askubuntu-com wouldn't help either (with copy into
unreadable terminal display font output) Gnome-tweak didn't help, BUT I
can copy text from terminal into libreoffice document and thus make it
readable afterwards. I cannot find any information about "system font
output/printing" on the whole internet leaving me with a mysrltery about
how that stuff works from xserver to gnome, Wayland-session login
IMPOSSIBLE in order to print the correct display font ... I will attach
some screenshots later on if possible.

P.S.: firefox/libreoffice fonts are being displayed correctly inside any
homepage

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-06-28 Thread Marcello Nuccio
It's not always easy to check that the pasted text it's the correct one,
then this is a data corruption bug. That is why I think this is a
critical bug.

Worse, the most affected users of this bug (non-technical ones) are very
unlikely to ever report it. For example, I am a programmer and I only
discovered this bug when my wife, a non-technical user, reported it to
me. She started to see cut and paste problems with Ubuntu 19.04, almost
one year ago, but at the same time, I have never had any problem,
because, as a programmer, I mostly use different software. My wife has
never filled a bug report, as most non-technical users (I think). Then I
don't know how to raise awareness of this problem.

[Bug 1879968] Re: copy/paste still sometimes fails in LibreOffice on mutter 3.36.2

2020-06-08 Thread Marcello Nuccio
How can I help to fix this bug?

I can easely reproduce it easely on three differnt computers (one new
install, and two upgraded from 19.10).

The only workaround that I have found is to install xubuntu-desktop or
lubuntu-desktop. I cannot use "Ubuntu Wayland" because libreoffice
becomes sluggish (I can't reproduce it reliably, it seems completely
random) and because it has limited remote desktop functionality.

[Bug 1721719] Re: gvfs-info bashism

2017-10-18 Thread Marcello Nuccio
You are right, the bug is fixed upstream. I have manually downloaded
gvfs-bin_1.34.1-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb and checked the file: it includes the
fix.

However it is not fixed on my computer. And I do not know why.

Unfortunately I have not found the package in /var/cache/apt/archives,
then I am not sure if the .deb installed on my computer is the same.

I have never tampered with my installation. This is a fresh install of
Artful Beta1 updated once a day with "apt dist-upgrade". I dont know
what has happened.

Regarding the use of "$@:2", there is no error displayed because:

1. "$@:2" is valid syntax in both shells, but it is clearly a bug
because it is expanded to "$1" "$2" ... ":2", which does not make sense.
I think that in bash it should have been "${@:2}" (2 is an offset),
while in dash the syntax is not supported and you should use "shift"
instead. You can check it by running:

$ echo 'echo "$@:2"; echo "${@:2}"' | bash -s foo bar
foo bar:2
bar

$ echo 'echo "$@:2"; echo "${@:2}"' | dash -s foo bar
foo bar:2
dash: 1: Bad substitution

2. "gio help info" discards all parameters after "info", then for
example "gio help info :2" is equivalent to "gio help info".

In short: I think you can safely remove "$@:2".

[Bug 1638990] Re: nvidia-367 with kernel 4.4.0-45-generic won't boot

2016-12-21 Thread Marcello R Duarte
This bug renders the system broken for anyone using nvidia drivers +
fully updated ubuntu 16.

I agree the work arounds aren't all that easy to implement. Nouveau is
not really an option for most people because of poor support and low
resolutions.

To get the older kernel to work you have to rebuilt the Nvidia drivers.
I had to do this from console because unity refused to log me in.

According to the wiki any bug that affects the system from booting
should be classified as critical as well as any bugs affecting large
portion of users. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance.

I think a lot of users are running into this and just have no clue
what's going on. At first I thought it was a HD issue.

[Bug 1638990] Re: nvidia-367 with kernel 4.4.0-45-generic won't boot

2016-12-19 Thread Marcello R Duarte
This issue hit me last night after an update. Ubuntu 16, GTX 980 Kernel
4.4.0-53-generic and nvidia-367 drivers.

Nvidia official drivers are on 375.2. Has anyone tried Kernel
4.4.0-53-generic along with latest nvidia drivers to see if it fixes the
issue?

I can reproduce after I set up LDAP server and client to use StartTLS.
In plain setup, no write to non-connected socket is issued in the
atfork handlers of child process, so no SIGPIPE is raised.

[Bug 1397250] [NEW] SIGPIPE not caught in do_atfork_child()

2014-11-28 Thread Marcello Blancasio
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Package version: libnss-ldap_264-2.2ubuntu4

If a process using libnss-ldap calls fork() and SIGPIPE was blocked, the
atfork() handler in the child process failed to catch the SIGPIPE as it was
supposed to do, that is in the call to do_close_no_unbind(). So that, the
uncaught SIGPIPE will be eventually
delivered when the child unblocks signals. This usually make the child process
die unexpectedly.

I found a well-known Linux vendor fixed this issue with the following
patch. This unblocks the SIGPIPE before calling do_close_no_unbind() and
restores the original sigmask afterwards:

[Bug 1003950] Re: launcher does not show minimized update manager while clicked

2014-10-17 Thread Marcello Nuccio
Eric Lambart, did you close the app by right clicking on the launcher
icon and choosing Exit from the menu, before trying to launch it?

To find the app, you have two options:

1. or write software update (without the final r) in the dash (Super
key OR Super+A, not Super-R).

2. choose System details (I dont know the exact translation, but
should be the first menu item) from the gear menu in the top right
corner. Then click the button in bottom right corner, if updates are
available.

About the crashes, it's off topic for this bug, so please report it as a
separate bug report. However, since I had similar problems, I can say
you that it's probably a problem with the video drivers. Here's a couple
of references that helped me to solve them:

Oddly enough, copying ~/huge_file to the same remote samba share _with

So it appears to be an issue with cp and gvfs.

[Bug 1236619] Re: gvfs smb / cifs file copy performance is terribly slow

2014-10-16 Thread Marcello Romani
I have experienced this bug on two Ubuntu desktop 12.04.5 x64 systems, copying
to a debian 7 / samba 3.6 share.
I haven't tried other OS versions though.

Steps to reproduce:

Open remote share so it gets gvfs-mounted under ~/.gvfs
cd ~
cd .gvfs/path/to/remote/samba/share
cp ~/huge_file .

Speed: roughly 5.5 Mbyte/s

sudo mount /remote/samba/share /mnt
cp ~/huge_file /mnt/

Speed: roughly maxes out wire.

[Bug 671789] Re: Shotwell rotates images incorrectly

2014-09-14 Thread Marcello Romani
Shotwell 0.14.1 here.
Steps to (re)produce the bug:
1) import images without copying - thumbnails and images are displayed
correctly, as per the orientation tag
2) double click on a vertical (i.e. taken in portrait mode) photo
3) right click - open with external editor (gimp)
4) gimp asks if I want to rotate or not - yes, rotate
5) modify image, then save
6) shotwell starts eating 100% cpu and eventually crashes; when re-launched,
the image is distorted (see screenshot)
issue 6) happens about 80% of the time.

For the record: photos were taken with a Canon 60D camera, and are
located on an external ext4-foramtted USB hard drive.

** Attachment added: Distorted image as shown by shotwell after being edited
with Gimp.

[Bug 1329070] [NEW] Shotwell crashes when viewing photos imported from ext usb hard drive (connected)

2014-06-11 Thread Marcello Romani
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

Import pictures from ext hd:
1) Launch Shotwell
2) Import from folder (without copying), point to a folder located on an
ext4-formatted external USB hard drive.
3) Import completes successfully.
4) Close shotwell.

(Shutdown and power on laptop).

1) connect the usb hard drive; the folder where the pictures where imported
from is accessible through Nautilus
2) Launch Shotwell from command line: the thumbnails show up without issues.
3) Double click on a thumbnail: as soon as the image is shown in low-res,
filling the entire right-hand area of the application, Shotwell crashes with
the following output:

Re: [Bug 971061] Re: acpi reports battery state incorrectly

2014-02-22 Thread Marcello
Hello,
I am affected by this bug since, a couple of years (same laptop here,
530U). I have personally experienced it on my laptop on multiple Linux
distributions (including Debian and Arch).

I perfectly understand your policies, but I do not really see the
rationale behind closing the bug with WONTFIX and asking a lot of people
to open a lot of new bugs to signal the very same thing.

For me, the bug is indeed solved by the juanmanuel's userspace program
(thanks a lot!) I've been running that program since it was
posted on this thread, and it works like a charm.

The bug is also clearly described upstream on the kernel Bugzilla, where
juanmanuel's solution is being turned into a kernel patch, so an
upstream fix is likely to be on the way.

I hope you'll find a way to put in evidence the relevant information,
especially when there will be 100 opened issues for this SINGLE problem
(or 100 issues immediately closed as duplicates???): this is clearly a
SINGLE bug with a SINGLE reference to a SINGLE upstream issue.

From my side, I am *not* going to open another bug just to increase the
Internet entropy (and reduce the likelihood for someone searching about
the problem to find the workaround)...

I have actually never thought about debugging seriously - Thanks anyway for

P.S.: I even had tried '#sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-panel' plus 'sudo apt-get

Have a good day - inspite of all

[Bug 1169469] Re: ruler invisible

2013-12-16 Thread Marcello Romani
Hi!

Yes, I'm still running 12.04. To be precise:

cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

dpkg -l | grep screenruler
screenruler 0.960+bzr41-1

and the ruler is visible. Moreover, it stays on top no matter which
window I switch to.

So it's a fixed to me.

The same happens to me. htop has the right status, while upower is not

I don't know what htop is monitoring to display the battery status...

Then pressed CTRL+D

That's all.

Did a test a few minutes ago: / usage starts to grow as soon as the scheduled

It keeps growning even after the action is complete, until / is full.

A sudo /etc/init.d/atd restart is enough to stop the growth and bring

[Bug 1219161] [NEW] Software updates window not shown

[Bug 1170624] Re: kdesvn won't start

2013-04-19 Thread Marcello Romani
Thanks for the quick reply.
I checked my /etc/apt folder, and spotted this:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/svn.list
deb http://opensource.wandisco.com/ubuntu lucid svn17

I commented that line out, did an apt-get udpate, reinstalled kdesvn and
had no problem at all.

Awhile ago I needed a more recent subversion installation but didn't
want to upgrade the whole OS just for that, so I added that particular
repo. Problem is, I forgot about that.

So I think you can close this bug invalid. Sorry for decreasing the
signal-to-noise ratio :-P

[Bug 1079618] Re: Menus do not show up when opening an existing file

2012-11-18 Thread Marcello Nuccio
apport-collect does not work for me because I am not the bug's reporter.
However, I have tried to find a reliable way to reproduce this bug. I
have found it to be very easy to reproduce on two computers, but it is
not that easy to understand when it happens.

I have come to the conclusion that it is a race condition, because it
happens more easily when start-up is slower. Sometimes the menu is shown
and seems to work, but clicking on any menu item does nothing. Sometimes
the shown menu is the menu of oosplash, instead of the menu of the
application (Writer or Calc.) Sometimes the menu is shown only by doing
Alt+F10 and not by holding down the Alt key or hovering the mouse on the
top panel. Sometimes the menu is shown after switching to and from
another window.

There is no easy and reliable pattern for reproducing it, but it happens
frequently.

[Bug 971061] Re: acpi reports battery state incorrectly

2012-10-12 Thread Marcello
Regarding post #30.
In the attachment you'll find my patch to upowerd (file to be patched is
src/linux/up-device-supply.c). I applied the patch to upstream upowerd,
recompiled, and disabled via apt updates to upowerd.

Basically, this detects battery status basing on the AC adapter status
(if the status is not consistent, in the sense that the battery reports
discharging and the AC is plugged in, I set the status to UNKNOWN so
that the following code treat the status as discharging basing on AC
status, and so on).

Moreover, I had to enable polling for AC adapter (I don't know why
uevents are not reported nor how to enable them for AC status, I'm not a
kernel\low leven stuff expert..). The drawback of this is that status
changes are not recognized immediately, but at least are recognized...

** Patch added: up-device-supply.diff

Re: [Bug 971061] Re: acpi reports battery state incorrectly

2012-10-06 Thread Marcello
On 06/10/12 09:41, Jon Cowell wrote:
After BIOS update all was well for 15hours only!

Also for me, things worked well (both lid and power status) during the
first weeks of life of the laptop (a Series 5 Ultrabook).

Yesterday, after updating the BIOS I tested power connect/disconnect
recognition in both Windows and Ubuntu 12.04 and suspend on lid closure.
Everything worked fine. Then, in Ubuntu 12.04, I suspended the system
over night. Next morning, lid closurefails to be recognised by Ubuntu.
Power connect/disconnect fails to be acted upon properly by Ubuntu. In
Windows, lid closure still fails but power connect/disconnect still
recognised - but it takes several seconds rather than being almost
instantaneous when all was well the night before.

I found that
/sys/class/power_supply/ADP1/online
(the status of the power adapter) gets updated correctly, while the
battery status (charging/discharging), as found in
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/status
is frozen in the status after power on / resume after suspend. So
MAYBE in Windows power connect/disconnect is triggered by power adapter
changing status instead than by battery. I worked around this problem by
applying an ugly patch to upowerd so that power status change is
triggered also by power adapter... and that works acceptably for now.

Lid closure, instead, is completely broken also if suspend works well.
Can't test in Windows as I wiped out the windows partition ;)

Very infuriating!... is this Ubuntu corrupting things in the BIOS or is
the BIOS somehow corrupting itself with respect to ACPI.

I noticed the problem after starting up erroneously the recovery
partition. This messed up with the MBR and Grub, so I had to recover
Grub booting from an USB disk, and from that moment I noticed the
problem... (not sure if before that the problem was present or not)

[Bug 711815] Re: Nautilus sometimes won't establish connection to windows share

2012-09-10 Thread Marcello Romani
I see this behaviour on one of our 10.04.4 x86 clients. The share is
located on a windows 2000 ad controller. The bug shows itself when
single-clicking on the windows share bookmark.

Sometimes just waiting a few seconds and then clicking again on the
bookmark makes the connection work.

Other times there's no way of connecting to the share by using the
bookmark. On those days the only way is using the File = Connect to
server dialog box, which always works.

So far this bug seems to affect only our single x86 10.04.4 client
machine. All other client machines that connect to the same windows 2000
share are 10.04.4 x64, and none of the shows the bug.
