Seems strange that it was OK without it before the update; possibly
something strange in the install of PDO_MYSQL - either that or something

I have just hit this problem using the release version of Kubuntu.
From the comment above about a non-empty filesystem, I have looked at
the partitions and it appears that despite telling the installer to
format them, it has failed to do so, as there are many old files still
there.

partitions before installing, or get ubiquity to clear them or even leave them

As an experiment, I just tried removing and then re-installing kdm-kde4
through Adept manager.
I DID get a dialogue asking which display manager I wanted to use on
this occasion. The default option is kdm rather than kdm-kde4, which
means the problem wouldn't have been due to me accidentally

uuid links to my root filesystem.
BUT... /etc/fstab refers to filesystems by the much more sensible (and
memorable) /dev/hd* names; I think because I edited it back that way

I am experiencing this problem with a system newly upgraded from Feisty
to Hardy.
Steps to reproduce:
* Launch kcontrol or System Settings
* Select Appearance - GTK Styles and Fonts
* Either select Use another style in GTK Styles or Use another font in GTK
Fonts.
* Click Apply
* Close kcontrol
This is a complete showstopper for me, as my daily backups require my external
drive to be switched on and attached, which immediately causes kded to go wild
and screw the rest of the system.
Unless there's a fix very fast, I'm going to have to revert to Feisty :-(

I can now confirm that installing KDE4 is DEFINITELY changing the
default display manager without asking.
I had removed all of the KDE4 packages as it was nowhere near ready for
use. With the KDE4.1 betas being released, I decided to give it another
try and without any interaction at all, it

The problem appears to have been because update-initramfs failed when
installing the new kernel.
This was because I'd had issues with the udev rules that were installed after
upgrading to 8.04 so I'd replaced /etc/udev/rules.d with my backup.

It was from an upgrade as Jonathan suggested. Not QUITE bug 272378 but
evidently related. It was actually because ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc
had a line in it saying:
folders[$e]=$HOME/.kde4/share/apps/kmail/mail
Correcting that line solved the problem. Looks like another migration
problem then.

Finally had time to set up a crypto disc on a clean Intrepid install and
I can confirm that this problem persists.
I'm prompted for the filesystem's passphrase but if I type it
incorrectly, I don't get re-prompted, the boot just continues and then
quickly fails because, not surprisingly, it can't
