I updated another system to the 2.6.31-15-generic #50-Ubuntu kernel and
here it works. So it seems a problem specific of my other system. I set

Cannot sync PALM TREO 680 after last update
The problem was caused by the visor module being loaded when plugging
the Palm Treo 680 into the USB port. I had the blacklist visor line
commented out /etc/modprobe.d/libpisock9.conf, after putting it back
again the rebooting went away.

But after a restart in 3.2.0-18 I did not get either, so I think this
