I actually thought it meant, check for an updated version of this
installer i.e. clicking the button would simply check for (and, if
found, install) a newer version of ubiquity - *not* any of the other
software updates that might otherwise be dealt with post-installation.

install Ubuntu Hardy to a sata2 hard drive using the amd64 alternate cd
daily build for 2008-02-16. Will try a text install again using a more
current amd64 alternate cd, and will extract and post /var/log/syslog if
it fails
Me too - When I login, the bottom panel is automatically hidden. When I
click (anywhere), the panel is restored. This on my x86_64 system since
upgrading Gutsy to Beta a couple of days ago. However, I have none of
the problems Gladstone describes when changing workspaces using the
switcher.

it's still there on Tribe 5. But my observation is that the whole
progress bar is oversized - too long, too thick and too blurry (compared
with my normal Feisty install) - with all the extra length going to the

Some of the recent postings here have prompted me to re-test some of the
assertions I made in my March 31st bug report.
I first of all try unmounting the following devices from the gui (BEFORE
trying Martin Pitt's suggestion):
External USB hard drive: PROBLEM REPLICATED. Right-click on desktop

same bug each time I try to unmount/eject any type of removable drive or
removable media (including a cd-rom as well as couple of usb hard
drives) from my AMD64 version of feisty (see screenshot below).

This Bug seems to me to be pretty similar to #99538.
However, I've only just now run into the problem described there - I
pretty definitely was NOT having any problems of this nature when #94582
was filed here on March 22nd.
