I'm getting the same gdm issue in i386. its not a 64 bit specific issue.
I'm also not using any PPAs: just straight up karmic and a few medibuntu
packages.
My work around is using a xfce session from via xubuntu-desktop

I actually have a floppy drive and this bug is causing the drive to
constantly read (click) at a frequency of about once every 2 seconds.
Its got my nomination for most diabolically annoying bug of the karmic

My symptoms disappeared with consolekit 0.2.10-0ubuntu4.
Unless there is some greater issue in how network manager interacts with

I'm getting this everytime I run apt-get:

The error seems to be with gnome-terminal. Sorry

If it helps: linux-image-2.6.20-8-generic breaks functionality of the wireless
card bcm4306 (bcm43xx: YOUR FIRMWARE IS TOO OLD. Firmware from binary drivers
older than version 4.x is unsupported. You must upgrade your firmware files.

I have a complete failure to boot with after an upgrade to initramfs-
tools_0.85dubuntu5.
Its hanging at the very start of usplash. I don't see any tty or dmesg
output.
I had successful booting at initramfs-tools_0.85dubuntu3.
