This is similar in effect to #1366928 and may have the same root cause.
When flashing the krillin using the MTK flasher tool as opposed to udf, on
first boot adb shows offline and no amount of toggling the developer switch and
setting new passwords change that.
The reason

On the krillin the force-adb task is not started when changing the password
from the UI.
On the other hand sudo touch /var/lib/extrausers/shadow triggers it.
This can be seen by adding logger statements to the script.

via sysfs if properly configured.
For screen orientation I think we can manage with only reading the accel bits
as seen here (there's a link to a test app there)

yes, they only work with the 3.2 kernel as that is what Intel tested the
proprietary drivers with.
