menu for the Desktop, and not the menu for files on the Desktop. I just

Bug #62529 should be fixed in Karmic meaning you can drag Bookmarks like
Home, Documents, Pictures, etc. from 'Places' menu to your Desktop to
create links.
If Trash is a bookmark you should also be able to drag that to the
Desktop.
