This is a libva issue, not vlc. You can get a similar error by simply
typing:
vainfo
In my case (maverick release, Libva 1.0.1-3, vdpau-va-driver 0.6.3-1) I
get a segmentation fault:
Blocked: call to setenv(_PX_CONFIG_ORDER, , 1)
libva: libva version 0.31.1
Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing

How do you know the output is accelerated (with mplayer?). Please post
the output.
