libpoppler (which is a higher version than precise) that I can't fix.

I've successfully applied the patch from debian [1] and xpdf works fine for me,
a least against this bug. Please test it from my ppa:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rcart/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xpdf

sudo apt-get install pidgin
Pidgin (like many, many others packages) will recommend you a lot of GTK
dependencies if you don't have a Gnome DE (Desktop Environment). This is
because the package should integrate much better with those package.
To avoid this behavior and just install

You're right. Clicking the quit option in the launcher should exit the
opened instance of pidgin, but it doesn't. A quick way to quit it is to
click the quit option in Buddies menu to properly exit pidgin.
