I think I've noticed a pattern... when I plug in my laptop and do *NOT* touch any input device and then walk away the laptop will both suspend (in violation of my preference for it not to suspend when on AC power) and then lock the screen immediately after resume and having unlocked the screen.

Yes, I'm sure this isn't the case. This is when i walk away from the machine and then come back. Apps running: xchat-gnome, emacs, chromium, gnome-terminal, firefox, gwibber, empathy, liferea. Probably with emacs, xchat or chromium being the app at the front (I haven't noticed any pattern yet)
