Follow up to my above comment: Disabling the local cdrom repository in my Synaptic settings seems to have worked around this problem. To summarize: -- go to System-Administration-Synaptic Package Manager-Settings-Repositories and uncheck the cdrom with Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty Jackalope' checkbox.
