This is an old bug, now that dekko is there by default it handles the mailto: URI schemes dispatching but the issue is that the URL dispatcher does not handle more than one handler for a given scheme, it is still an issue pending on the url-dispatcher and not prioritized yet. The url-dispatcher

I will check if g-mail has implemented support for 'mailto' url. But in some cases you do not have any e-mail app installed and this can cause some confusion for the user. I am adding ubuntu-ux team on this bug, to help us to find a good solution. ** Also affects: address-book-app

If dekko is installed, clicking this icon will launch dekko. There is no support in gmail yet for mailto urls, and that's what needs to be added. But note, the related bug of https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1370008. The user should be notified if there are no apps
