I have this bug since I updated from 11.04 to 11.10 on all upgraded
computers. A clean install does'nt have this problem.

Me too, though I got an error about not being able to install ubuntu-
desktop which I assumed would stop the upgrade, but it didn't

For the record, I was able to upgrade successfully after removing the
ubuntu-desktop package, like the previous posters.
