Same problem here, that bloody port 6. A runaround that works for me:
startup with a previous kernel, version 2.6.27.14 in my case and wait
for a new kernel that does not malfunction on my computer.

In my case it was a faulty hardware ( must be most of the cases) . It
was under warranty and I had it replaced . Now it's working fine.

I am having exactly the same problem. It only happens on the front USB ports on
my case though. If I put the USB flash drive on the front port it takes
anywhere between 2 and 10 minutes to get recognized.
Is it assigned yet?

Sometimes its mounting through ehci_hcd and sometimes it takes uhci_hcd. After
polling addresses for sometime.

On more investigating. I found that when it takes long time, it uses
uhci_hcd driver instead of ehci_hcd so I am getting the USB mounted as
USB 1.1 instead of 2.0 . Another thing is that it happens when I am
using a docking station with my laptop. If I remove the docking station
it works fine. So
I am trying to make out a pattern. It seems that once I make the USB
deive to use ehci_hcd , then it works fine on subsequent removals and
plugins, even with docking station.

A windows XP running on virtual box is detecting the usb correctly, not
ubuntu though what a crap.

This problem exists with all kernels. I am currently using 2.6.30 rc3.
May be its not a kernel issue some other problem. I wonder if I am the
only one having this problem. If any thing has changed with kernels is
the time taken to detect . It has gone up to even 10 mins.

I installed 2.6.29.1 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
and the problem is still there.

And one thing I notice that the time it takes to detect usb drive varies
( ie the time during which this error message fills the dmesg log)
Sometimes it happen in 10 -15 seconds and sometimes longer
