Thanks. Sounds almost like a bug in the PulseAudio driver for VLC, but I don't know for sure. If more people show up that are having this problem, perhaps that will add some more information to the problem and help us figure out what's causing it. As you seem to have solved the problem, I'll leave

David, thanks for your quick response. I think I can shed some light on this issue. I solved the problem by going into VLC Tools Preferences Audio. I changed the Output module from the default (Pulseaudio, I assume) to ALSA and the distortion went away. While playing VLC, this change shows
