Cannot set dual display with radeon driver on Oneiric
The reporter worked around the issue by using open-source radeon drivers
and has requested the bug be closed. I am marking it incomplete in case
anyone wants to contribute more information.

From the blog in question here is the solution in a nutshell:
There were issues with the AMD proprietary driver (“fglrx”) for both my
5770 and 5870 graphics. After removing the proprietary AMD driver, some
residual issues still persist.
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle*

When installing and removing fglrx, did you do this through Hardware Drivers
app (jockey-gtk)?

I managed to get this working by cleanly uninstalling the fglrx driver
and then reinstalling some components as detailed here.
