Michael, to find the cause of high CPU usage you need a profiler, not a debugger. Most profilers need special code compiled in to your application, but Valgrind has a plugin Callgrind that works with any existing binary (as do all valgrind plugins):

2012-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Michael, I thought about it and using a debugger may be appropriate. Because callgrind (and valgrind in general) will slow down compiz/unity to an almost unusable speed. You won't want to run it that way for long enough to even reproduce the gradual degradation. Also, the gradual degradation will

I should add that if I shutdown my Natty box, reboot into the Oneiric partition, then I get the same previous results: a linearly increasing CPU usage with compiz. So, it is not machine-dependent. Finally, on an Oneiric install with the same nvidia hardware, but not running TwinView, I have not

There's a lot of work being done here, and there are a few canonical engineers that are working day in and day out on Compiz. Don't take the work they do lightly; Compiz was an unmaintainable mess when it was inherited; They're trying to sort it out. Regardless, this bug report should not be
