There IS a logout button in Unity. Can you check if running unity
--reset helps, or try logging into a guest account and see if there's
any difference?

Ugh, i just realized my problem. This is embarrassing.
It was signing into the guest account that made me realize it, because
the logout button showed up there (unity --reset made no difference).
My logout button was simply disabled in settings. Unfortunately I cannot

Unity missing a logout
This bug affects me. Default installation and themes all installed.
Session menu has no logout option and User menu only offers the switch
account option.
What more information do you need?

I have exactly the same problem - no logout button, loads of missing icons in
gnome-control-center.

your .xsession-errors to the bug? Some of the indicators have colored
icons which seem to indicate an incorrect theme is used which might lead
to a known issue in indicator-session leading to have no power menu
