This issue (maintenance shell control-D) is gone with the updated
kernel from the download site... over-reported kernel error upon
upgrade stems from my ignorance of the need to remount the SD-card for
kernel upgrade... duh... ;-)
Now I just need to hunt down a way to restart the SD slot...

perhaps add a prompt to re-insert SD card during kernel updates...

There still seems to be a bit of a disconnect... if the client is
already installed then the installer will not complete.
I decided to purge all packages associate with ubuntuone-client. I
verified that the Ubuntu One menu item was no longer in Settings

A dirty fix ( what I did) was to edit the menu entry and change it from gksu
to gksudo... my change was merely for a couple GUI apps I use regularly.
Axe's solution seems more system wide and just as easy.

I also had a similar experience with lucid... and this issue may already
be resolved.
When you get to the graphical login. Press and hold keys Ctrl Alt and
press F2. This will give you a non-graphical login. Login with your
username and password. Then type: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get
