Does everyone here uses or runs the system CPU and/or Network indicator?
Or can someone confirm that your system also crash without the indicator
running?
I wonder if this is the culprit. See if it still happens when you
don't have the indicator running.

My observation so far: They happen mostly :
- Many times after playing video/music either
*Update*
So I make the jump and install kernel 3.6.3-030603-generic 5 days ago.
( I use the instruction from here
http://www.upubuntu.com/search/label/System)
And also install a new Nvidia driver 3.04.64.
For about 5 days I didn't have any crash untill about 5 minutes ago.
Bummer.
It crashed
@Brian Semrad and @Joe Carey, and others who are new here, please read
bug description.
This bug is about a *complete system lock-up*. No other TTYs can be
started. Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution
is hard reset. This is NOT a compiz problem.
Seems to happen on a
@Joe Carey, sorry about that, I thought you mention you still have the
logs so I assume different bugs. Cause this bug doesn't generate logs as
far as i know.

videos with relatively no problems. I think
Hi,

Almost two weeks after applying the fix from #713. Here's what I find:

Imre Gergely,
Not necessarily true about older hardware doesn't seem to freeze.
Mine is Core2Duo with Asus Mainboard and Nvidia Geforce 7600GT. 2GB DDR2
ram. Running fine with Windows 7, but when booted with Ubuntu it's like
playing russian roullette.
I was about to try ubuntu 10.04 when I
After running 12.04 LTS for months I finally gave up. I'm back to
windows now.
I have exactly the same problem. Totally *random* crashes. No mouse, No
keyboard, No ssh. Nothing at all. But in my case after a while (about
15-30 seconds) it will reboots itself.
I have tried kernel 3.2.x all the
So after 3 months I'm back here to check what's up with this bug. I have been
using Windows in the meantime.
Seems like not much going on here. No solution yet?
Ok someone suggessted kernel 3.8.8 which I haven't tried. But since I've
tried all kernel 3.2.x up to 3.6.x, I'm a bit reluctant to try
I'm still having these freezes almost everyday. (Complete freeze, no
tty no keyboard no ssh, keyboards blinks and after awhile it will reboot
itself).
I Can't believe there's still no solution.

Yes. it got to the point that I'm afraid to run virtualbox or watch youtube or
play mp4 or music.
It's ridiculous.
I understand that bug exists and will always exist. Even on windows or
mac. But this bug is too critical to be realease as LTS. This is like a
beta version.
Now what I want to
@rsoika,
I don't think it is ivy bridge related because my hardware is not ivy bridge.
I'm using older Core2Duo cpu and Geforce 7600GT with older intel chipset. I
forgot what it's called but definitely not sandy or ivy bridge. It is a legacy
time tested hardware that shouldn't have had bugs
@ciriffo
I've tried that kernel 3.4.0 long time ago but I had no luck with it.
Same freezing problem. Since than I've tried 3.6.3 and still having same
problem.
I'm going to try Matt C #713.

I did the upgrade, and so far looks good. Installation went smooth.
Had to choose Previous version from Grub menu because it default to
3.6.3. and manually choose 3.5.0-23. All went well after
Today it happened again twice.
The first time today crashed while I was moving my mouse. Only firefox
opened, but earlier before that I did play something on youtube about an
hour before.
The second time happened just now, while I was playing a MP4 using VLC.
Only played for like 2 seconds than
Thanks Koopee,
As this crashing is still happening to me, actually it happened 5 minutes ago,
and twice yesterday too,
so I'm going to try 3.6.0 kernel. See if it helps for me too..
Fingers crossed.
Thx

FYI, this bug is for hard system Crash only!.
You can't do anything with the system other than reboots (actually in my
case, it will reboot itself in about 20 seconds). No Ctrl-Alt-F1, no
SSH, nothing)
And Yes... still happening.. Just crashed again.. Seems pretty random.
Can't see usefull
@Martin,
I'm using 3.6.3-030603-generic. I just recently upgraded.
I also update nvidia driver to ver 3.04.64
My system dual boots with Win7 which works just fine in Win7..
Martin, I notice you're using kernel 3.5.0-18-generic.
Since I'm using kernel version higher than yours,
would you
For me, lots of time it freezes totally (keyboard lights blink, no mouse, no
keyboard, no ssh)
while working with just firefox,
I don't use chrome, no compiz, and no unity.
I log in using Gnome Classic (no effect)
Many times although not all the time, I previously play some video, either MP4

it hits you... bang!!!
@shayne,
which version of 3.8 exactly are you using? Can someone else confirm that 3.8
is good?
Seems like I read somewhere it still freezes.

I wonder if this is a ubuntu problem or kernel problem or driver

If this bug is kernel or driver problem, then other linux distro also
suffer the same problem. Does anybody know if other linux have the same
problem?. We may just not hear it because there are not too many bug
reports on
Now gone fourth straight day without a freeze on ubuntu 13.04 kernel
3.8 rc2
a glimmer of hope
Anyway to install 3.8 on 12.04?
