Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately xmms was removed since Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron because it was unmaintained. So we will not fix your bug. You can use audacious instead. I just did a fresh install of xmms on Gutsy (Kubuntu) and it doesn't play .mid files at all. I then installed xmms-midi and the .mid files play, but I get no sound out of them. I played a .mp3 and that worked fine. I am confirming the problem. Xmms freezes on the desktop after playing a midi file.
