2016-03-04 Thread Brains
** Description changed:

  Update: 6/12/2012
This bug is about a complete system lock-up. No other TTYs can be started.
Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset.

Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
  and Intel graphics.

If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the mouse
or use the keyboard, file another bug.

- Thx. Joris V. (brains).
+ Thx. Brains.

  Update: 5/21/2012
Updating the kernel to 3.3.6 as suggested by Michael in #91, the system seems
stable, no freezes yet in 5-6 hrs of using and watching videos for couple of
hrs.

  Original description:
I recently installed newly released ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit version on my
desktop. And it is frequently freezing, for the first few hours it ran smoothly
and when I started watching videos it started freezing randomly.
I have to use hard restart every time.
Initially it was only during videos but now even during normal browsing it is
freezing.

I am using on board graphics and do not have any graphics card
  installed.

Can someone please help me here, I really love the new looks of 12.04
and it bugs me not being able to use :(

  Below is my hardware configuration:
Processor: Intel CORE i3 processor (2nd generation)
  Board: Intel® Desktop Board DH67BL
  Ram: 4GB
  Graphics: On board
  HDD: 500 GB

Please let me know if you need more information, or any specific logs I
  can capture (and how).

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2015-01-02 Thread Saravanan S PAJANCOA
Solution checked in Ubuntu 14.04.1

Use vm.swappiness vm.vfs_cache_pressure to the minimum possible
Run the below command in Terminal
sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf

Add the below line at the end of the file. Select File Save. Select File
Quit. Restart computer
vm.swappiness=1
vm.vfs_cache_pressure=1

Note:
This can be a workaround, if top command shows kswapd0 taking 99% or 100% cpu,
while heavy memory activity
Heavy memory activity may be playing Dota2, browsing faulty websites, etc...
Suggested swap partition size in Ubuntu 14.04 64bit with heavy memory activity
Atleast double the size of RAM or 20GB whichever is bigger
Use bigger swap partition than the current, if the above issue still persists
Example swap entry in /etc/fstab to enable swap manually in /dev/sda7
/dev/sda7 none swap sw 0 0

maybe memory is overclocked? Try to test your memory with memtester
from a desktop session. This helps me to find the issue in memory.
memtest86+ did not find this.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2014-08-10 Thread Andrew Voumard
Hi,

I made a comment some time ago on what fixed this for me in comment
#790:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/993187/comments/790

Since then, although it has been pretty stable under
3.4.0-030400.201205210521, I was still getting [albeit less frequently]
complete freezups that show exactly the same symptoms as I reported
before.

The following NEW FIX has in contrast been COMPLETELY ROCK SOLID [not a
single crash yet] in so far as no hardware freezeups are concerned, and
I have been hammering the video display on the main KDE login session. I
am also remotely accessing that session through x11vnc, and also run 2
separate NX sessions in the background, all of which are very busy
used interactively. When I used to try running 2 busy NX sessions + an
x11vnc session on the main KDE login session, it would not take too long
for a complete hardware lockup to occur - within an hour easily with 2
busy NX sessions [I only had good stability with the one x11vnc session
to the main KDE desktop under 12.04.x LTS]. I am also running virtualbox
guests in the NX and x11vnc sessions [Note that I have 32GB memory so
it's viable to run lots of sessions virtualbox guests].

The FIX is quite simply: upgrade from Kubuntu 12.04.5 LTS - 14.04.1 LTS
(note that as of right now, if you upgrade to 14.04, you will in fact be
taken to 14.04.1.

Hope this may help others.

Thanks
Andrew

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2014-01-27 Thread VaidhyM
I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I am facing the full freeze issues too.
So much that its froze for 12 times in 2 hours. Hard Reboot is the only
way to revive the system. The configuration is,

Intel Core i7 2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
4 GB RAM (2x2) + 2 GB Swap
nVidia GT 540M

During freezes trackpad doesn't work. Some have upgraded kernel from 3.2
to 3.4 and have solved their issues. I am running kernel 3.8 and still
facing issues. The Xorg display drivers seemed to create problems so
running Additional Drivers for nVidia recommended by Ubuntu. Any views
on how to proceed further? Strangest thing is never once a bug report
was generated after hard reset of the laptop. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2014-01-27 Thread Antonio Falk
Hi,

I was running different Nvidia graphic cards with different proprietary
Nvidia drivers (see my previous post).

Changed the Nvidia graphic card to an old HD 5670 Radeon AMD and loaded
the catalyst drivers. *Until now no more system hangups has appeared.*
Will try e newer AMD R9 290 card later on.

This explains why my kids PC did not hang at all, due to running it on the
internal Intel CPU graphic.

So for my system, it seems that the freezes was related to graphic card. I
don't know if the bug is in the proprietary Nvidia drivers or in Ubuntu.
Sad to change from the Nvidia, because it always worked like a dream in
Linux.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2014-01-09 Thread Derek Gentle
I am also having an issue where my system completely locks up. Mouse /
keyboard are unresponsive and I am unable to ssh in from another system.

This is a new build with all new hardware:

ASUS H81I-PLUS Socket 1150 w/ Intel H81 Chipset
Intel Pentium G3220 Dual-Core Processor @ 3.0 GHz
Team Vulcan 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (under clocked to 1333 by the BIOS)
Intel 330 Series 60GB SSD
on-board Intel graphics connected via HDMI to a 24 Samsung LCD TV

I was originally running openSuSE 13.3 w/KDE, but as this system is meant to be
a multimedia system, it was causing more trouble that I wanted to deal with. I
do not recall it freezing at any time.
I then installed Kubuntu 13.10 64bit as the multimedia support is better than
SuSE. This is when I started to get multiple lock ups. I thought maybe it was
due to something not being happy with 13.10, so I installed 12.04.3 LTS w/ KDE
4.12. I also removed the 8GB 'Team' memory and installed a single 4GB ADATA
1333MHz DIMM.
This appeared to have resolved the issue, but it locked up on me three times
yesterday. Once while using Amarok (remote mySQL database collection on a
FreeNAS NFS share), once while just using the desktop and another while
attempting to play an 800MB .MKV file in XBMC standalone (remote mySQL, file
located on a FreeNAS NFS share).
I've checked the various logs, and there does not appear to be anything of any
relevance as nothing 'crashes' exactly, the entire system just locks.

I've disabled all power management features functions.
No wi-fi hardware installed / enabled.
Cat 6 gigabit network connection.
Microsoft Sculpt bluetooth keyboard w/ ASUS bluetooth dongle
- paired with bluemon
Microsoft ARC wireless mouse w/ MS wireless dongle

I have also been facing this problem for a long time. It began with
12.04LTS as I remember. Previously the system was stable as a rock
running 10.04 LTS.

Tried to re-install the OS from scratch, but still facing the problem.
Changed Video card, main board. Swapping RAM tried different graphics
drivers, different available kernels but there is still random freezing.
Could not effort to change the $1000 CPU...

To me it happens most often when kicking on a link in Thunderbird to be
opened in Firefox. Complete freeze, but the mice some times still moves
around. No response from keyboard at all (numloc and capsloc LEDs does
not change). Some times the system freeze when running in idle, and I
discover this at logon screen. Normal uptime is about two three days
between forced HW reboots.

The strange about this bug is, that my kids runs a PC Intel Core i7-3770
3,4GHz Asrock/Gigabyte B75-Chipset mATX without facing any problem at
all. I'm also user on the PC, running Gnome classic and compiz. I never
log out, just switch user. It only reboots when applying new packages
that requires a reboot, els its always running stable.

Current configuration facing this problem:

I am also facing the same issue.
But since I am running kernel version 3.12.x the system is very stable. Freezes
only once in a week with 3.12.5 (before I had freezes 1-3 times a day)
I am not sure if it is the kernel version. As I am now working with Debian
Jessie I also got a lot of updates from firmware to wifi driver. I am still
thinking about if the issue could be related to the wlan area/power
management?

I have been facing this problem for a long time now and it still doesn't
seem to get fixed. To me it happens most often on multimonitor using

Using a Dell Studio XPS 1340 laptop with:
Ubuntu 12.04
Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-57-generic x86_64 GNU/Linux
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz
GPU - NVIDIA SLI:
nvidia-smi -L
GPU 0: GeForce G210M (UUID: GPU-1b0674e3-9c44-6152-8b35-14ac258e89df)
GPU 1: GeForce 9400M G (UUID: GPU-0c72438f-4b81-5d92-cf00-974a003c6fc5)
Driver Version: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.20 - dowloaded from NVIDIA site, but
getting the same problem with the ones in the Ubuntu repository

I've been losing a lot of time trying to fix it by reinstalling NVIDIA
drivers. It caused me to lose a lot of work by freezing my computer
randomly.

2013-11-18 Thread rsoika
I also switch to Debian 7. But I had still freezes.
Now that I am running kernel version 3.12.0 it seems that my system becomes
stable. I saw 'only' one freeze in 14 days.
After all (I am affected from this problem still 10 month!) I guess that the
problem is issued by the wifi. But I did not know how to test or verify this.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-11-18 Thread trallallero
I can confirm that it's caused by compiz not unity.
I have removed unity and activated the compiz application switcher as alt+tab
on precise doesn't work.
Often, when I press alt-tab to switch application, ubuntu freezes and I cannot
even use ctrl+alt+f1
It even happened with alt-f4 to close a window.
Now I understand why alt+tab has been disabled on precise.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-11-17 Thread Eduardo
476 users and still no attention from the developers. 8 MONTHS after the
release of Ubuntu 12.04 and still having whole system freezes on a daily
basis. In two fully different computers, with the i386 and amd64
versions of Ubuntu 12.04.

Users that turn their computers off after a several hours session will
almost never notice the freezes. It is us users who want to leave our
computers running for more than one day, who are suffering this problem.
The average running time before a whole system freeze is about 10 hours,
though sometimes it may happen in much shorter/longer time. Please
somebody explain me that, or I will start elaborating conspirational
theories, because it really FEELS as there is a hidden timer in the
kernel, with an random average pre-set running time around ten hours.

Is this part of some fight against P2P piracy? My teenage eMule times
are far beyond, and I don't much know about how the corresponding
programs work today, but I badly need to run numerical simulations at
home, and some of them take about 3 days. Most times they are ruined by
these freezes. I already have changed the distro to an older Fedora in
one of the computers, so that my simulations run fine there. But my
laptop still has (K)ubuntu 12.04. I am still waiting, hoping and apt-get
updating, for months now. But I am getting tired. I may give up soon and
say goodbye to a long, personal tradition of confidence on Ubuntu. I am
getting sick of waking up in the morning, going to the computer and
seeing that it has frozen again during the night.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-07-31 Thread Andrew Voumard
Hi,

I also had the problem where my kubuntu 12.04 install was completely
hardware freezing - i.e absolutely no response from any input device and
in particular CTRL+ALT+SysRq REISUB was not responding at all either.

I found the problem was happening close to when I was switching the
external monitor on off (I switch it via a KVM switch).

Note that I use x11vnc to remotely connect to the same desktop, and I
think that may have helped trigger the fault.

I updated ALL installed software, but to no avail, it was happening 3 or
4 times a day ...

*** THE FOLLOWING FIX WORKED FOR ME -been ROCK SOLID for a week now ***

I installed the following kernel upgrade described here:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/142192/can-i-install-linux-kernel-3-4-in-
ubuntu-and-kubuntu-12-04

So I downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-precise/

And did:
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i
linux-headers-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_i386.deb

Rebooted, and the problem completely disappeared (so far anyway !)

My machine specs:

uname -r
3.4.0-030400-generic

MOBO: ASUS P8Z77-V-LX

I am using the onboard video, with nothing but the default kubuntu video
installation.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-07-13 Thread Tapio Ryhänen
Hi everyone,

I think this bug is not solved on 12.04 LTS. If it's a kernel bug, the
patch should be backported to the latest official 12.04 kernel and
delivered via normal software update.

Some people suggested for example to update to kernel v. 3.3.6 available
here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3.6-precise .
That kernel is more than one year old and does not contain many
important security fixes. If start using something like this, maybe
should update to the latest kernel from kernel.org and compile it. I
think most of the users don't want to do that.

I run many computers with 12.04 without problems, but I have fatal and
occasional freezes only with my newest Intel Ivy Birdge laptop. (see
#774)

Hoping for the fix, please. Thanks.

2013-05-13 Thread Rabit rabit
So after 3 months I'm back here to check what's up with this bug. I have been
using Windows in the meantime.
Seems like not much going on here. No solution yet?

Ok someone suggessted kernel 3.8.8 which I haven't tried. But since I've
tried all kernel 3.2.x up to 3.6.x, I'm a bit reluctant to try 3.8.8.
Can someone else confirm this kernel version fixes this bug?

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-05-09 Thread Robert Hrovat
Few weeks ago we moved from 10.04 to 12.04 at work. Mostly because of
newer machines had problems with older kernels (no SATA, no sound). I
have to admit that 10.04 was light years away from 12.04 when it comes
to stability. There was mean time between crashes measured in weeks,
when 12.04 can have 10 crashes in one hour. It's really disappointing.
Right now I'm upgrading kernel to 3.2.0-41 and hoping it will fix
freezes and crashes before coleagues at work crucifies me.

Will report after few days if that helped. If not, I have no clue what
will I do since I'm running out of options. So if anyone can help me
pointing in right direction or what can I do to help developers find and
kill this annoying bug, I'm here.

Oh and those 60 machines at work are all from DELL, models Optiplex
380SFF, 390 SFF and 1030SFF. Just what's built in, with Intel graphics
and all runing on Gnome Classic - no Unity. All machines are connected
to network and has mounted Samba and NFS shares, each one of 100 users
uses mostly Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Audacity, VLC and some
custom developed software.

Ironicaly Ubuntu HCL lists those machines as compatible when clearly
they far from that.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-04-29 Thread Jurgen Lambrecht
I want to confirm the bug for LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) running a
3.2.0-4-amd64 kernel.
- Also complete freeze, even no tty; at least once a day, sometimes 4 times a
day.
- Workaround: do not start Firefox with a video in a tab waiting to be viewed
in a spare moment
- Solution: kernel upgrade. To 3.8.8 in my case.

If you have this bug, you are in luck, just updating your kernel to 3.4
will fix it. If that doesn't work, then you do not have this bug. You
have something else. See if your symptoms or situation match this bug:

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-04-16 Thread Frank Schilder
I think this bug is assigned to the wrong package. It is very likely a
kernel problem. On my hardware, the kernel actually detects the lock. I
posted extracts from the syslog file recovered after a hard reset in the
following two posts to another thread on the same problem: a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1154006/comments/42;1154006#42/a
and a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1154006/comments/46;1154006#46/a.
The lines to look for are

Apr 10 18:58:51 ceylon kernel: [ 2412.456005] ioatdma :00:08.0: reset
Apr 10 18:58:52 ceylon kernel: [ 2412.603756] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#3 stuck
for 22s! [svn:5127]

in #42 and

Apr 14 13:16:12 ceylon kernel: [18557.772002] sending NMI to all CPUs:

in #46. I just went back to 10.04, the instability of 12.04 is just
ridiculous. I hope that a kernel developer is following this discussion
and might find a hint in the syslog extracts I posted under the other
number.

2013-04-14 Thread Tapio Ryhänen
Hi Everyone,

I'm still having this issue (2012-12-21 comment 609). Very annoying!
Freezes seem to be completely random, at the best my laptop has been
running fine longer than month, but for example during the past two
weeks, maybe ten freezes.

Yes, mouse not moving, keyboard not responding, no ssh, Ctrl+Alt+F1 not
working, no tty.. Closing lid does not suspend. The only option is to
power off the computer from the power button and start over.

The same laptop also has W7 and RHEL6 installed, they run without
problems..

Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with the latest updates. Please, see the lspci-info
attached for the details. No proprietary drivers, Intel Ivy Bridge.

The bug #1154006 similar.. Fix appreciated, please.!

2013-04-14 Thread christian aichert
People...

I am tired of all this 12.04 problems...
It freezes all times long.
My PC is working very slowly.
I tried for weeks to solve the prolem.

At least I thought maybe better with Windos...

I remembered how great the performance was with Ubuntu 10.04...and than I
simply installed
it again...

kicking out this stily looking but very unpractible 12.04 with such a
kind of problems that I think ubuntu should kick it out and go back to
10.04...

Now I am writing this with my system running well, fast, all grafik
aplications work well and with NO FREEZE absolutly...!!

People :

GO BACK TO UBUNTU 10.04 and save a lot of time in bug findings and
commandline.sreaching...

Have FUN!

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-04-05 Thread Felix
OK, i know, this bug should be stopped posting to but i could kind of
workaround it:

A PC i am responsible for was crashing with 12.04 and 12.10 every hour
nearly. What solved it for me:

1) Updated to raring ringtail (upcoming 13.04), kernel 3.8.x. (Why is raring
THAT stable right now? It works really well here! But pls keep in mind its
pre-beta. Though with this crashes here, you should be good to go for an
upgrade ;-) )
2) Updated firmware on the harddrive (a SSD in my case)
3) flashed new bios (ASROCK mini itx mainboard h61m-itx)

In case you follow the steps, choose 3) 2) 1), cause updating the
frmware on the SSD might erase your data.

It was a rage-upgrade (PC was close to forced death), i did not have
the patience to update one-by-one to see what was the reason.

Good luck everyone, the Linux here is now rock solid again!

I did re-use this bug as those Sandy Bridge i915 drm hangs system

same bug on Ubuntu 11.10...

2013-03-25 Thread Linus van Geuns
I am using 12.04 x86_64 and since a few days, my Ubuntu informs me about
problems, which seem to relate to xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal.
Sometimes, the whole computer (GUI hangs, no reaction on mouse/keyboard, can't
switch to the terminal) hangs for several seconds. A few minutes ago, the
machine completely froze and needed a hard reset.

May this be the same issue or is it a new one with the lts-quantal backport?
What info do you need?

What we really need is to stop adding to this bug report. If you still
have a bug, it is a different bug from this bug. If you are still
experiencing freezes, file a bug report apart from this one, and include
the files they ask for (I was new and didn't do this at first but there
is a helpful reminder generated by a bot on how to use apport to collect
this info and update your bug report very easily via the command line).

Install the 12.04.2 kernel/xorg backport stack ('xserver-xorg-lts-
quantal' and it's depends/recommends) to get rid of most of the issues
on ivybridge and/or earlier intel.. closing as fixed.

And for the last time: for non-intel gfx users, this never was the bug
for you. Check you hardware or blob driver version, then file a new bug
and leave this 'forum' alone.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-15 Thread Harald Krischner
Whatever the actual reason is: For me the problem vanished since I
disconnected the additional monitor (I had 1-2 freezes per day, not one
in a week with just 1 monitor).

If there is any hint how I can improve my bug report data on this odd
issue I'd be glad, since the log files do not to help, nor there is
something different to point at.

I just had major data loss due to the computer freezing up because of
this bug. A whole git repository was hopelessly damaged. It contains
major work data. I don't know what I can restore since the last backup.
Maybe some of it.

I want to extend my thanks to the developers that marked this bug as
WONTFIX.

2013-03-15 Thread Joe Carey
Judging from the thread, it's marked as won't fix because it is not a
single bug we're all complaining about, but a complex interaction of
several bugs. Many people are complaining about completely different
symptoms, all with a freeze, but even the character of the freeze is
different from case to case. I have marked this bug as not affecting me
and filed a bug report detailing my exact symptoms. Might be time for
others to do the same.

There are probably a fair amount of people who also get this bug happen
while the computer is in sleep mode and think the problem is a wake from
suspend bug when in fact the computer has had a full freeze.

I'm sure that if someone from canonical or someone with knowledge could
debug the issue it can get fixed but at this stage i will have to wait
till next year and see if ubuntu switching from x to mir solves the
issue.

I won't be able to do much now as i am refusing to put linux on my
computer now as previous installs of many distros has not been
successful but i will stay subscribed to this in the hope that it one
day gets fixed.

I was affected by this bug. In mid January I Installed PSensor on my
Laptop . I found very high temp spikes before the fan would increase
speed. The graphing mode of PSensor helped me see this. I installed
thinkfan, and set up the parameters to start the fan at low temps (2900
rpm at 48c and full fan by 54c) . I have not had a single crash since. I
have to conclude that these crashes were from a fan profile change that
came with 12.04 and continued with 12.10.

2013-03-13 Thread Joe Carey
A google search for ubuntu 12.04 freezes frequently produces About
792,000 results (0.16 seconds) .

I opened a bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1154006.

If you have the exact same symptoms as I do, and have also attempted to
debug it as I have, consider adding yourself to that bug report.

If however, you are able to do anything with the keyboard or mouse, or
if the screen continues to update, then it is clearly not the same
issue, so please in that case do not add yourself.

I'm sure some of the 440 odd people who are on this thread have bad
hardware, but is it really possible that we all do?

Tried the 3.9 kernel and raring a couple of days ago and was good for a

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-12 Thread James Jordin
FYI: I realise that this bug has been marked as 'Won't Fix', but
providing what details I can in case this is looked into again (with
12.04 being LTS and the release likely to be adopted by enterprise
customers requiring paid support).

Experiencing sporadic full system freeze/crash - approximately 2-4 times
weekly. No mouse or trackpad response (no cursor movement), no keyboard
response. System will not halt as normal when closing the laptop lid.
Recovery requires hard shutdown/reboot.

Linux Mint 14 and Ubuntu Studio (Xubuntu) run on the same laptop
(multiboot) without this bug occurring. Haven't experienced the same bug
running Raring live from USB.

Attempting this fix:

2013-03-08 Thread Imre Gergely
I'm also using two monitors on the Intel i7 desktop that's freezing, AND on the
AMD system that's NOT freezing. I'm not using any other monitor on the laptop,
that froze once in ~3 weeks.
There are no monitors being used on the 50 servers that crash every now and
then.

If we're talking about the complete freeze, without network access, I
don't think it's the monitors the problem (IMO).

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-08 Thread rsoika
I think a second monitor increases the probability of freezes. Maybe because of
more GPU Memory usage. When I have connected a monitor to my laptop I have more
often a freeze. And if I work only with the laptop display I have seemingly no
freeze since using kernel version 3.8.2.
I agree with cemc that its not the monitor but more about the memory usage of a
system which is different when working with one or more monitors.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-05 Thread Imre Gergely
Me too.

I have an Intel i7-920 desktop machine with Lucid 10.04 64bit on it (kernel
2.6.33 from TRIM), it is pretty much on all day long and used fairly heavily
(java, virtualbox, flash, browsers, music, videos, movies). It is not shut
down, only suspended (it is connected to an UPS), it has gone even weeks
without a reboot.
It randomly freezes, no mouse, no keyboard, no ping. Only a hard reset helps.
The funny thing is, these lock-ups are very very random. Sometimes it locks up
when the computer is idling, nobody's at the keyboard, there's no user
activity. The frequency of the lock-ups seems random also. No lock-up for a
month, or two, then suddenly bam! In the 4 year time it's been up, it locked
maybe a dozen times, maybe 20 times.
I changed the VGA card, I changed the PSU, it did not help.

In december I got a Lenovo ThinkPad W530, with Ivy Bridge i7-3720QM,
16GB RAM. It ran Win7 for a month, without issues. A couple of weeks ago
I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it, and started to use it daily
(transitioning from the desktop I've described above). Moved stuff to
the laptop and I'm working on it as I was on the desktop, doing the same
things.

Today... bam! It froze. No mouse, no keyboard, no ping, nothing. Hard
reset. Lost a couple of files (had backup). Only the integrated video is
enabled in the BIOS, using Gnome Classic with no effects.

I also have another desktop at home, an AMD Phenom X6 1090T, with Lucid
10.04 64bit running on it for years (with 2.6.33 kernel for TRIM), no
freezes. Last year upgraded to 12.04 LTS 64bit, not one freeze since
then.

I also have another older HP Core2Duo T8300 laptop at work which is
pretty much a workstation. I've been using it for years, first with
10.04 64bit, then with 12.04 64bit. It stays plugged in and running for
weeks on a docking station, it gets hammered with Virtualbox, Java,
browsers etc. and it did NOT freeze once.

All these machines have sort of the same setup, an SSD boot disk some
harddisks for storage.

I'm also managing some 50 Lucid 10.04 32bit LTS Server Edition servers
installed in different places, all have i3 or i7-2600 CPUs, 4-8GB RAM
and are hammered through LTSP from 20-30 terminals (mainly firefox).
These servers also are locking up once in a while, at random and not
neccesarily when under load. There is no monitor and keyboard attached
to them as they are servers, so I don't actually know what's happening,
all I know is they need to be reset because they can't be accessed on
the network. When I tried to reproduce the problem with one of them, I
couldn't. It ran for a week and never froze.

Before the i3/i7 hardware, I had some other older Intel hardware on
these 50 machines, with the same 10.04 LTSP install (it's actually an
image file that gets installed everywhere), and we did not have random
freezes at all.

Oh, almost forgot... I also have another HP server with an Intel Xeon
E5404 with 8GB RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 64bit installed a year ago, it's up
24/7, no freezes.

I'm not sure what to make of all this, but it _seems_ that i3/i7 just
freezes. That's the only common thing with these. Also the older
hardware doesn't seem to freeze, AMD doesn't seem to freeze. Again, the
freezing is very random and relatively rare, but still...

2013-03-05 Thread Rabit rabit
Imre Gergely,
Not necessarily true about older hardware doesn't seem to freeze.

Mine is Core2Duo with Asus Mainboard and Nvidia Geforce 7600GT. 2GB DDR2
ram. Running fine with Windows 7, but when booted with Ubuntu it's like
playing russian roullette.

I was about to try ubuntu 10.04 when I read your comment. sigh As I
remember it, the older 10.04 doesn't have this problem. But seems like
it happens on your systems too.

I have tried the #713 fix (with 3.5.0-24 kernel) initially seems to
worked really well for about 1 week, then started to randomly freeze
again even up to 3 4 times a day. Now that I think about it, could it be
caused by a regular system update that brought back those freezes?

I have yet another system update just yesterday, now it seems to be working
well again for two days
I'm running 3.5.0-25-generic kernel now (if these kernels had anything to do
with those freezes at all)

I've also been having daily crashes with no logs, complete freeze, no response
to magic keys-REISUB
Im running Ubuntu 12.04 and I have tried the LTS Enablement stack with no
success, currently im at kernel version 3.5.0-25

Ive tried various other tricks on this message trail, but no success so
far. I definitely want to get this solved!

It seems anytime Im running Unity GUI, I have these problems. Overlapping this
fact, is that I usually have VirtualBox running also.
(When I run w/o gui, I get uptimes on the order of days)

But I have similar Ubuntu setups on other machines that doesnt crash
with GUI+VirtualBox running.

I do see however a difference in my /var/log/kern.log:

Ive had the TSC unstable for as long as I can remember from using this
system (Intel DX79TO, i7-3930k) Im going to see if fixing this error
will solve my crashing problem. However, I do not see much online on
how to solve the unstable TSC.

Does anyone else have unstable TSC?

Hello,

I tried the *713, having had several times freeze an our.

I will report if it works.
If you do not see more comments from me, consider it as an sign of success to
use the 713 solution.

Thanks,

Hi,

seems to work better my system.
Videos are showm better, before the player often showed only black and I had to
move the window to restart the video again.

No frezze since than.

Well, try that fix, maybe it does not fix all, but helps a lot. *713

Woohoo! For 12.04.1 LTS users with constant crash problems as described here
and on-board ATI/AMD/Radeon graphics cards, this looks promising:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack
If you want the 3.5 kernel and xorg packages from 12.04.2 made available in LTS
for 'hardware enablement' purposes run:
 sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal

Upgrading mine. Will report success here.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-03 Thread Rabit rabit
Hi,

Re: fix #713

Almost two weeks after applying the fix from #713. Here's what I find:
Initially things seemed to run ok. It was stable solid and smooth. But those
freezes
eventually happened again.

Once it even freezed not long after I restarted the computer, even before
running
any applications except probably firefox.

This freezes are very random. Some day I get by without a freeze, but some day
I get several freezes in one day.
Before the #713 fix, I got a lot of freeze after playing videos (MP4 or
streaming) or MP3s. After #713 it gets better I think. But I still almost
always get a freeze after running virtualbox (win7) in ubuntu.

So #713 doesn't fix the problem for me.
This is really frustrating. Considering ditching ubuntu now... Any
recommendation what Linux/ubuntu version?

As for trying another linux distro i have used a lot of them but keep
running into the same issue although i am not sure if i have tried a

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-26 Thread Big Ben
Dear all,

I had the complete freeze bug with my laptop running ubuntu. Tried
installing gnome 3 (which I like much) but it did not solve the problem
(see previous posts). A few days ago, I installed kernel
3.6.10-030610-generic. The freeze problem seems to have gone for good.

I followed the procedure given at this address:

http://la-vache-libre.org/?s=installer+le+noyau+linux+3.6.10

The commands they give are:

cd /tmp

wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47950494/upubuntu.com/linux-kernel-3.6.10
-O linux-kernel-3.6.10

chmod +x linux-kernel-3.6.10

sudo sh linux-kernel-3.6.10

sudo reboot

That's written in french, but the sequence of commands looks rather
straightforward. The page first explains how to install the kernel 3.7. Scroll
the page down to the section where they talk of 3.6.10 (avoid odd numbers in
kernel versions...). Note that the authors nevertheless warn that installing a
new kernel can have (bad) consequences and that you'd better make a backup
(honestly, I did not and proceeded with the install).
The last sudo command given at the bottom of the page tells you how to remove
the kernel 3.6.10 if you're not happy with it:

sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.6.10*

Note that you may have to re-install some of your drivers (or update some of
them). For example, I had to install the appropriate alx driver for my atheros
network card.

If after installing the kernel, you have troubles with your Nvidia card,
you may (hopefully) solve them with:

cd /usr/src/linux-headers-3.4.4-030404-generic/arch/x86/include
sudo cp -v generated/asm/unistd* ./asm

2013-02-26 Thread rsoika
I have tested kernel version 3.6.10 in the past and this did not solve the
problem for me.
I think I have tested most of the versions between 3.0 and 3.8 with no luck :-(
I have a total freeze every two days and I search the internet every day for
any hints.

One thing I figured out some days ago was that ater the freeze I can
switch-off/on my laptop display with the function key (fn+F9). But this seems
to be the only thing which still works - strange?
My theory is that the freeze depends on the powermanagement and the situaton
when the battery is full charged. But I see that also some desktop users have
the same freeze so my theory is not relay strong.

@Joe Carey, sorry about that, I thought you mention you still have the
logs so I assume different bugs. Cause this bug doesn't generate logs as
far as i know.

And Re: #713 fix,
After several days use my system seems to be more stable, I'm able to play
videos with relatively no problems. I think it did freeze only once after
playing videos/music.
But, almost everytime I run Virtualbox (after several minutes/hours) it does
freeze. Same symptom. So there's improvement, but not fixed yet, the bug still
there.

Re #713

I tried your fix too, but with no luck. Crashed again several times

Then it crashed. I'm new at linux but able to follow instructions... what
other information would be helpful?
I've been researching this bug for weeks to no avail.

I've only been using ubuntu since 12.04, and this is the second laptop
I've been running it on, but the problem was not there when I first
started using it. Just in the last, I dunno, 6 weeks. Halp!

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-20 Thread Rabit rabit
@Brian Semrad and @Joe Carey, and others who are new here, please read
bug description.

This bug is about a *complete system lock-up*. No other TTYs can be
started. Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution
is hard reset. This is NOT a compiz problem.

Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
and Intel graphics.

If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the mouse
or use the keyboard, file another bug.

If you can still work with your system after crash/freeze or you can see
the logs than this is not the same bug we're talking about in this
thread.

In my case when it freeze, it is dead completely. No logs, no mouse no
keyboards (keyboard lights always blinks and if the sound card was
playing something, the sounds will loop). The only solution is to hard
reset, or just wait after a while (15-20secs) my system will reboot
itself automatically.

And to update Re #713:
After applying the fix, it's been smooth and solid now for me. No problem no
freezes. In fact I feel the system seems faster and smoother.
Still, fingers crossed, it has only been a couple of days with no freeze. (Very
encouraging considering before the fix, freeze could happen several times a day
in random)

several times but it always closed. Then complete freeze of PC.
Hard reboot several times, and each time the same symptoms. In addition, after
each reboot, full error message but never the same and always freeze after few
minutes.

Unfortunately I had reinstalled everything and it no longer a problem
for a few days.

Today, the problem reappeared. Firefox and thunderbird crash, attempt to
reopen but not full and freeze.

Interestingly, I have a windows 7 VM with virtualbox vm and keeps
rebooting every 1-2 minutes since the first freeze.

didn't open thunderbird. I have been working in Chrome testing Amazon

I have ran for 24 hours on 12.04.1 with LTS Enablement stack from
Quantal installed (with kernel 3.5.0-23-generic and X.Org X Server
1.13.0 / 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6.1~precise2).

Although the OS and graphics run smoother in 3.5 kernel, I just had a
crash. Different message but similar symptoms. Black and white dump
screen showing Kernel Bug message followed a few seconds later by
corrupt graphics on screen and a need to Emergency Sync + Reboot -
although system IS responsive to Num Lock this time, it's not entirely a
hard lock but as Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work to get to a console it might
as well be.

This time error is:

Kernel Bug at slub.c Invalid Opcode

working in Unity as normal.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-19 Thread Matt C
A 3.8 kernel did not appear to be compatible with 12.04.1... Although it booted
to the login screen there was:
  (1) No grub menu, (2) No boot screen just purple, (3) When plugging in a USB
keyboard (none connected initially), nothing happens, (4) No network. I had to
boot into rescue media and restore the previous Kernel 3.5.

This comment is just in case anyone else having graphics stability
problems over the past 1-2 months is following this same path I am, on a
quest to restore desktop stability with an AMD/radeon chipset.

I just installed some new bugfixes to the 3.5 kernel from proposed.
There are a few radeon bugfixes listed in the changelog. I Fingers
crossed.

This may be my last post on this bug, as it has been marked as (yet
another) Won't Fix.

This past 6 months has been very poor for stability of both for my Ubuntu
Server and Ubuntu Desktop installations.
Then there is 12.10, which I downgraded immediately to 12.04 upon encountering
the Amazon lens, several software crashes and other gems.

I can't get through a single working day without some form of Ubuntu
crash. Yet my laptop at home is stable.

I think it's time to review Won't Fix policy. Yes, this bug has become
a hodge-podge. It is also High + Critical severity and a serious
stability issue. I would never close a serious system usability bug
like this as Won't Fix.

I bet many of the 428 users who have marked themselves as affected by
this bug would be willing to run whatever diagnostic steps the
developers need.

The reason why many posts are so vague could be because this is an
unrecoverable random crash, which leaves no logs to post.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-19 Thread Rabit rabit
Re. #713

I did the upgrade, and so far looks good. Installation went smooth.
Had to choose Previous version from Grub menu because it default to
3.6.3. and manually choose 3.5.0-23. All went well after the upgrade,
vga driver, virtualbox and everything else works fine.

I've thrown a lot of videos and musics and streaming. Ran chrome and
Firefox and youtube (which usually causes the freeze) with no freeze at
all today all day.

It is too early of course to conclude anything, but I see a glimmer of light at
the end of the tunnel heheh
Cross fingers...

2013-02-18 Thread Matt C
@slucas1979 : I will try Kernel 3.8. Thanks for the tip.

fglrx radeon driver is more stable more often but has it's own issues and
crashes. Overall is no better. Back to open source driver.
trying 3.8 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc7-raring/ as there is
mention of benefits for ATI chipset users.

(Mine is: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200])

2013-02-18 Thread Matt C
Woohoo! For 12.04.1 LTS users with constant crash problems as described here
and on-board ATI/AMD/Radeon graphics cards, this looks promising:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack
If you want the 3.5 kernel and xorg packages from 12.04.2 made available in LTS
for 'hardware enablement' purposes run:
 sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal

Upgrading mine. Will report success here.
