I am not sure why this happened.. but it can be probably fixed by
recovering grub2.

One easy way is to use the live cd, boot from it, mount your / partition
(depending on if you have a /boot diff partition, you may have to mount that
too) and run
sudo  grub-install --root-directory path where you have mounted your /
That should do it for you!
