Discovered something rather interesting/confusing...
First I did a rebuild of php5, modifying libapache2-mod-php5.postinst to
make it abort (exit 1) just before it had time to run its invoke-rc.d
apache2 force-reload.
Turned out that after installation the new packages, and having

Discovered this thread after having started working on bug #403599.
While they deal with the same issue, I'm not sure which report is the
proper one to base of, considering the Apache2 and PHP2 packages might
have changed somewhat since this report originated.

I tried to find out what triggered it but I could not find it. It wasn't
even a very compilicated script. Like 200 lines of code and without the
use of another library/framework. After rewriting a few parts the script
runs now, but I regret that I did not save the original script elsewhere

Micah,
I am unable to find anything in the PHP packages that would cause this.
However, it is possible that your web server is setting the timezone. Here's
what PHP's documentation[1] has to say about how it retrieves the default
timezone:
* Reading the timezone set using the
My apologies, I read further and found the following:
If none of the above succeed, date_default_timezone_get will return a
default timezone of UTC.
I'm not sure if this package defaulting to UTC time is necessarily a bug
as changing it simply involves editing the date.timezone php.ini option

/etc/init.d/apache2 had force-reload as being
