I was able to work around this by downgrading the kernel on a Ubuntu 14 box to 3.12.20-031220-generic #201405160935 (and of course wasn't seeing this with Ubuntu 12). I've periodically tried booting back to the standard Ubuntu 14 3.13 kernel to see if it's been fixed (and also tried
