True explanation was in the install logs:
Not replacing deleted config file /etc/samba/smb.conf
Install/upgrade will fail. To recover, please try:
sudo cp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
sudo dpkg --configure -a

I removed samba and reinstalled it. Works fine.

i was able to install samba just fine on kubuntu jaunty 64bit. could you
try and purge your current samba install and reinstall and see if that
fixes the issue?
