Yes, it is, and was right after my desktop Ubuntu installation.
I replaced the 9.10 with with the one I took from 9.04.
To be true, I begin to think there was something within my database
directory /home/database (into which my.cnf pointed to) that prevented
normal installation and running,

I've got similar problems but on Ubuntu 9.10 64bit
First, when I installed this ubuntu, I recovered all /etc/mysql/ files from
9.04 and moved it to my current Ubuntu installation.
Then after a while I installed mysql-server 5.1 which gave my configuration
error while installing.
