I don;t have mysql running yet I receive similar errrors,
I have described the Problem in Ubntu Forum at the following url..
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1229506
Here is the Error I get...
==
bi...@bijay:$ sudo apt-get -f install

The following NEW packages will be installed:
mysql-server-5.0
The following packages have been kept back:
linux-generic linux-headers-generic
it seems as though mysql must not be running when installed. I stopped
mine and then installed without a problem
--
package mysql-server-5.0 5.1.30really5.0.75-0ubuntu10 failed to
install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
I do want to add that if you stop the server with the following command:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop
Then do the update it seemed to work (at least for me).
When the server is shut down the script still fails.
a...@agd-laptop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql stop
* Stopping MySQL database server
Good information Jakyra and Alex. My data was migrated from another,
non-ubuntu linux and probably didn't have that user, either. I'm
invalidating this sense it isn't a bug. Thank you.

Status: Confirmed = Invalid

package mysql-server-5.0
This also happened to me on Ubuntu 9.04 on i386 architecture and same
package.
