also uninstall samba-common before trying to reinstall? I cannot see a
reference to samba-common being uninstalled (purged) on the dpkg log you
provided.

Thank you for your response. I didn't remove samba-common along
with samba but i just got this resolved by copying the missing smb.conf file
from a different ubuntu machine I have.
The status now is that domain resolving is very slow after installing samba,

Yes, you shouldn't delete files in /etc manually. The system remembers
you want them deleted and won't reinstall them. If you want to get rid
of configuration files when uninstalling a package, use apt-get purge
samba samba-common.
Closing as invalid against samba.
