Marking as fixed released since the original reporter remove skip-bdb
from my.cnf. The option has also been removed from mysql-dfsg-5.1.

This is my output on trying to upgrade to 5.1 after uninstalling 5.0:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.1

Could you post mysql information from /var/log/daemon.log to identify
why mysqld failed to start?

I managed to get it working by commenting out the line
skip-dbd
in /etc/mysql/my.cnf
