The same here too.Lucid i386 vbox.
Only when I killed the process I could continue with the update.The server
though works just fine.

If it helps, this happened again when vsftp tried to upgrade, and I
found that if I kill the vsftpd process as Update Manager is hanging on
its update, Update Manager continues its work. Maybe there's a deadlock
or something?
