please open a new bug report. I'll close this one now since we don't
have enough information to reproduce the issue you had.

Ended up having to use Synaptic. Just cleaned out all the supporting
files as much as possible. Core mysql is still there, but wont start on
system startup now, so I installed mysql in another area and moved on.

Hi Mark, thanks for taking the time to file a bug report.
Setting up mysql-server-5.1 (5.1.54-1ubuntu4) ...
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/mysql not found.
If you forcibly removed /etc/init.d/mysql , dpkg will respect that and
leave it gone, as it is considered a configuration
