It looks like I posted too soon. Removing the compiz packages did not
get rid of the locking up problem. My system ran for a while and then
locked up again. When it locked up a couple of the lights on my keyboard
flashed so I decided to try disconnecting my KVM switch. I have now run

tried Albrecht's xorg.conf but it failed. I have the GDM login screen
with the correct resolution but XFCE doesn't want to start. I fall back

I found the answer. Apparently the implementation of projectedTextured
that WoW uses is broken in the 64bit drivers right now. It is already a
known issue. The workaround is to set projectedTextures to 0 in the WoW
Config.wtf file for now. This worked for me.

I can't beleive this was rejected for Karmic. If the driver is fglrx
then do not do the other bug fix code that causes the performance

Hallo!
Trying again to install the patched version of xserver-xorg-server-mga
from Bryce's repository succeeded on Karmic where I had (somehow)
failed previously. Dual screen setup works again, and joy is restored.

I have the same problem with an imac 24 since I upgraded to karmic.
I have the problem with my current account and an a new account on karmic. I do
that to verify if the problem is due to my local .XXX files.
What I noticed also tha the number of popups depends on success to my
local .Xmodmap

If Nvidia has indeed fixed the issue, then the solution for Ubuntu 9.10
should just require the appropriate package maintainer to add the latest
Nvidia driver package to the repository.

Primary monitor doesn't wake up out
Well, I spoke too soon.
After 3 days my gui is locked again. However, and this is a helpful
improvement, I can still SSH into the machine.
top shows Xorg consuming 100% of CPU.
sudo service gdm stop just waits indefinitely, never returning me to
