I thought I could use the backtrace with gdb above even without
logging in from a remote machine but it seems this is not possible. In
the gdb session, after you attached to the process, typed continue and
typed ctrl-alt-f7 to go to the gui screen, the machine freezes
completely.

I have closed source driver one, but in Lucid it worked fine, it didn't
need a configuration of any kind. In maverick It is something like

This bug is fixed upstream, and the xorg-edgers PPA located at
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa has updated packages
with the fix included. I don't know if that fix is going to make it
into the official Maverick package, but I hope it does.

I can confirm that after installing nvidia driver 173.14.27, the problem
with the black screen after switching to a new user and logging off is
gone!

I have managed to repeat this a few times just to be sure it was not a one off.
Happens intermittently, not every time.
To create the fault, do the following;
System - Preferances - Power Management (Display set to very short time). Ie
Thank's to Luc's instructions, I have verified that this patch does work
for me as well.

I'll just note that I'm still seeing it, but quite rarely now. In
contrast, the new Firefox shutdown problem has become quite frequent...

Confirmed here as well, patch does in fact work, flawlessly. To bad my
RS690 isn't supported in Xorg7.5 However Patch works very well.

Having watched this a couple of weeks now, I don't think it is related
to Compiz. Actually, I do think it might be related to Firefox and
possibly some other interfering component.
I switched to Chromium quite soon after my comment above (#51) and
didn't experience any more WSOD crashes since
