I need to elaborate my previous comment: I'm running 12.10 amd64, and those updates I installed did include a kernel update (3.5.0-18). It would seem that I did have linux-headers installed for the intially installed kernel (linux-headers-3.5.0-17), but the updates I installed did not include the
