Romano, you don't have the same exact problem since you are using
fglrx. Andrew (and everybody else here) is using the default -ati
driver.

Regression - Desktop effects could not be enabled on ATI
Both the -ati/-radeon driver (which is the default supported driver for
your card in Ubuntu 9.04) and the -radeonhd driver have got power
management support in their development versions. So this will be
available in Ubuntu 9.10.
For now, you can test out latest development versions from my PPA
If you are installing files from ATI we can not help you. Your card is
supported by the free xserver-xorg-video-ati driver in Ubuntu 9.04. As
an alternative you can use the System-Administration-Hardware Manager
to install the proprietary fglrx driver.

We hope to get this fixed in the graphics driver soon. Disabling a
screensaver is a workaround (and maybe a needed one with the current
state of affairs), but the bug might kick in somewhere else as well.

Generally there are no card driver (like -ati) packages in the xorg-
edgers PPA (only for -intel because it is so... special). Test packages
for -ati are in my own PPA. However I don't think there is anything that
should have fixed this bug at this point. I asked specifically for
testing of one
I just saw Alex's post of today in the upstream report. The
2.6.28-12-generic kernel in Jaunty actually has CONFIG_MTRR_SANITIZER=y
so please try the boot options mentioned in that mailing list thread. (I
think enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=0 should do it but please
read that thread
