I tried installing Grub2 after reading Starla's post, and my mouse
issues seem to have disappeared as well. The procedure was pretty simple
and I was up and running again in just a few minutes.

I had this problem too, but I fixed it by re-installing GRUB. I had
previously installed GRUB on another partition a few weeks before
upgrading to Karmic, and because of that, my computer kept booting into
the old kernel instead of the new one. It also fixed some other problems

Did an upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic Koala - PS2 mouse worked fine in
